The coldest weather in February hit Bridgeport as the thermometer plunged to two below zero between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. Sunday, then climbed to 21 degrees by mid afternoon and settled near 15 degrees by early evening. The reading marks the coldest February day since 1950. The Weather Bureau at Municipal Airport recorded the extreme.
Burglars broke into William Rasmussen’s home at 59 Mercer Street Stratford yesterday between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. and escaped with a small safe containing 3000 dollars in cash and U S Savings Bonds. Detective Peter Roy says the entry was gained by forcing the inside kitchen door. Rasmussen operates a gas station at Broadbridges Avenue and Vought Place and arrived home with his family to find a bedroom and his office ransacked. The safe weighs 120 pounds and measures 18 by 14 inches. a brown bed spread used to carry and wrap the safe was also reported missing.
Hartford AP report notes national VFW officer angrily condemning the Redding Board of Education for a student editorial praising patriotism. Joseph J. Lombardo, Brooklyn attorney and VFW leader, urged the board to value uneducated opinions less and called for accountability during the Midwinter conference. Norwalk police and fire crews battled a blaze at the Jewish Community Center on Shorehaven Road. The White House reported he is in good condition and meeting privately with family members in a setting of heavy secrecy. Donovan said two unidentified men helped bring Powers off the plane, but he did not reveal locations or details.
New York AP reports lawyer James Britt Donnovan said the Abel Powers exchange could aid Marvin W. Makinen, another American jailed in Russia. Donnovan spoke after returning to Brooklyn with Francis Gary Powers, outlining expectations from negotiations with Soviet officials for the Powers Abel swap.
The West rejected a Soviet request to reserve two of Berlin’s air corridors to Hamburg and Hanover up to 7,800 feet tomorrow from 10:15 a.m. to 12:38 p.m. The Soviet aim was to restrict flights, a Western spokesman said, marking a second consecutive rebuff after similar attempts last week.

Paris, Feb 11 AP Leftist leaders refused today to back down in the face of a government order banning mass demonstrations at Place De La Republique and a one hour general strike planned. The protests oppose what they call fascist and secret army terror in France and Algeria. Socialists and communists say the demonstrations will go on as the secret army's campaign aims to block Algeria's independence and keep Algeria French. The campaign has grown more violent as French and Algerian nationalist rebels edge toward possible agreement.
Fred-1 Jéne Pryor returns to Detroit amid relief after 14 months away and 5 1/2 months in East German custody. Pryor says he was “a bonus in the deal” in the Powers case and expresses happiness to be home. He left Ann Arbor, Michigan, recently and was released yesterday.
Prince Charles, one year old, was rushed by ambulance to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London after falling ill at Cheam School. Surgeons performed an appendicitis operation under dimmed lights. Buckingham Palace said his condition is satisfactory. The news reached Queen Elizabeth at Windsor Castle around 2:30 am. Prince Philip is his father.
Astronaut John H. Glenn attended church in Cocoa Beach then resumed final three day orbital flight preparations slated for Wednesday. Weather appeared to be clearing after rain, with a NASA weather briefing planned for reporters tomorrow as Glenn awaited official scheduling.
