A chaotic Nichols meeting of the Sixth District Civic Association at the Nicole Avenue Firehouse failed to grant Councilman Herrmann a confidence vote. Supporters of ousting Town Manager Carleton Dey Reed faced opposition as charges against the chairman’s actions surfaced during the tense session.
In Stratford officials contended over a motion to express confidence in Colonel Herrmann. The vote failed to pass after a heated debate with fistfight incidents claimed to be averted. The meeting then tabled the motion by a 15 to 1 vote, a move seen as a victory for Town Manager Reed’s allies while James Neill faced accusations of rush tactics.
A committee of Actors Equity chaired by George Arliss concluded Eddie Cantor’s withdrawal from Florenz Ziegfeld’s Polls due to illness was justified. Cantor testified he suffered pleurisy and received examination after the tour cancellation. The panel said his condition required protracted rest and could not be aided by a quick recovery.

The report to the House will be delayed for minority remarks as dissenters prepare their position.
Illinois Attorney General W W Potter ruled that no religious texts may be used in public schools clarifying that Bible study cannot be part of state education. The ruling affects normal schools and Michigan State College though the University of Michigan is exempt. The decision states sectarian books cannot be used even if Bible study is optional.
Gloria Gould Bishop has filed for divorce, a Bridgeport area couple's case tied to a prominent Gould and Bishop lineage. Henry A Bishop Jr says he has received no notice of the action, while Gloria Gould Bishop's terse replies leave details unrevealed as questions circulate about a financial settlement and international proceedings.
Senator elect Frank L Smith of Illinois resigns from the vacant seat and is immediately appointed to the unexpired term by Governor Len Small who calls a special primary on April 10 and a special election in November. Smith declares he will seek renomination to test the people’s will against the Senate action that barred him. A proclamation sets the dates in Illinois politics.
In Havana on February 9, Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh inspected Camp Columbia where his Spirit of St Louis is guarded. Cuban war secretary Iturraldis praised Lindbergh’s courage, likening his name to Columbus. Lindbergh thanked them, kept the flag as a memento, and declined a ball invitation, noting he wished to stay longer if possible.
Mrs. Coolidge was ill with a slight cold and did not attend the dinner hosted by President Coolidge for Speaker Longworth and guests, including party leaders and officers. Speaker Longworth and his wife returned to the scene of their 22nd anniversary marriage, with a musicale following in the East room. attendees listed include Sen. Walsh, Rep. Tilson, Mrs. Edith Nourse Rogers, Adm. Hughes, Mrs. Hughes, Gen. Summerall, Mrs. Summerall, John C. Sherman, Miss Mary Pollard, and others from Norwalk and Boston city circles.
Chicago dispatch reports a man named Elliott shot dead five people and wounded two others, including policemen Lieut. Edward Murphy and Sergeant James Keegan, after a quarrel and a pursuit at the Omaha Packing plant and a south side rooming house. Elliott died in a later confrontation.

Hartford Feb 9 The State Board of Finance and Control retires Charles P Kellogg Waterbury secretary of Public Welfare on half pay effective this month after state service since 1895 The board also approves highway projects and land exchanges and names a committee to plan a memorial tower on Haystack Mountain Norfolk for Mrs Carl Stoeckel.
In Los Angeles on February 9, Wil lard Hickman faced a sanity verdict on two counts tied to a murder and kidnapping. He was found sane on both charges, with jurors instructing they must decide if he was insane at the time of the crimes. Attorney Jerome Walsh said an appeal would follow, as Hickman sat impassive during the reading of the verdict.
Maurice Landau secretary of the Progressive Welfare Association of Bridgeport was arrested after a $16,000 shortage appeared in accounts. Police detained him at the Newfield building office pending City court hearing. Landau also runs a sheet metal and electric sign business at 417 Main Street.
Fairfield February report states a Bridgeport owned car demolished after hitting a telegraph pole on the Post Road cut-off near Bergen Road. William Rivers of Milford sustained a fractured jaw and facial injuries. Joseph Donnelly of Bridgeport fled the crash scene after steering wheel was thrown. Louis Vasair of Bridgeport suffered finger contusions. Dr. Thomas A. Davis treated the injured. no charges filed.
Danbury police held Frank Macko eighteen, a local amateur boxer, on $1000 bond after allegations he damaged promoter Joseph Klemper’s car by placing emery powder in the crankcase. The clash followed a dispute over recent boxing engagements arranged by Klemper at Pioneer Athletic Club, with Macko later denying involvement. Official charges await in Danbury City Court.
Report from Danbury states Rev Wilbur Buster denied leading Klan members to attend a scheduled address by Anderson former New York league figure. The piece mumbles about misreported names Pussyfout and alleged anti Ku Klux protests, while clarifying Mr Johnson’s innocence and Rev Schoonhoven’s invitation to Knights of Columbus members.
