Aldermen vote to buy Soldiers Field and abolish the Fire Prevention Bureau. The plan lowers salaries across the Fire Department, reclassifies eight workers as hosemen, and moves equipment repair work to the municipal garage. The measure passes 16 to 7 with party lines and a few GOP dissenters.
Financial difficulties forced the Park Theatre on Main Street, leased from Frank Shea by the Messing Yokel Burlesque group, to close. Employed stage hands and box office staff allege nonpayment and cannot locate Manager James. Auditor-treasurer Miss Purdy says funds were withdrawn from the bank by a Yokel agent after a week’s receipts were deposited.
A patrol car rushed to Courtland street at 7 last night after a resident reported a man attempting to force a door. The unidentified marauder fled through backyards before officers arrived. Thefts from coal on tracks were reported on Housatonic avenue near Lindley street, and tools were stolen from Bridgeport Glass company at 831 Middle street yesterday.
Bridgeport announces a one week trial of stock productions at the Majestic theater with 25 to 30 cent prices after a loss of about 1000 dollars weekly. The plan aims to sustain spoken drama and gauge audience interest with The Sheik's Love Morosco production opening the trial. If prices draw crowds, program continues. if not, Majestic may switch to a pure picture house.

Martha Helen Woltowits 24 of 398 North avenue a patient at Bridgeport hospital fled with accusatory information. Louis Tyler of 38 Sheridan street arrested yesterday on a statutory crime charge.
Preservation of wage rates and working rules for train yard and engine service employees on all railways for another year was assured by two Railroad Labor Board decisions. The board postponed action on seventeen railways and nine subsidiaries seeking wage reductions and rule changes until after October 1, 1928, and similarly delayed cases from the firemen’s group about two-fireman requirements on larger engines. It noted that 75 per cent of rails already have agreements sustaining current terms since July 1, 1921, and said setting rates on a few roads would disrupt the overall railway labor situation given that over 95 per cent of mileage is under existing conditions.
President Harding is predicted to seek re election in 1924 with a unanimous GOP nomination. Senator Watson of Indiana pledges support for Senator Lodge for Senate leadership, vowing a united Republican front. Ismet Pasha accepts Allied capitulations terms, with Turks keeping Mosul reservations. Poincare relays favorable news to London as Mudania armistice to continue during Ismet Pasha’s Angora trip.

Steve Shon guk of Bridgeport pleaded guilty through an interpreter to violations of liquor laws on three counts. He could not pay a one dollar fine and was jailed. Judge Harlan B. Howe set a small fine because the defendant lacked funds for travel home. The judge promised to adjourn in time for Shon guk to reach Bridgeport that night. An official day in jail runs from sentence to adjournment. No other Bridgeport cases were disposed of in today’s session. Several Bridgeport residents failed to answer when their cases were called and warrants or defaults may be entered.
City hall session notes the Board of Relief heard 159 appeals to date, totalling 1.808 million in rebates on alleged excessive assessments. Firms filing include American Chain, American & British, and Lake Torpedo Boat. Board to reconvene 9 am to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm tomorrow.
The national employment census by the American Legion Americanism commission states more than a quarter million workers remain unemployed. Garland M. Powell, national director, announced the finding at a Louisville Legion meeting tonight in Louisville Kentucky on February 3.
In Memel Lithuanian insurgent leader General Simonaitis rejects the seven day Allied evacuation order. He insists Memel is Lithuanian based on the Versailles treaty and says he would withdraw if Allied fleets leave, seeking to join the port to Lithuania as autonomous. Lithuanian notes ask ambassadors to stop anti Lithuanian actions and to join Memel to Lithuania immediately. Newspapers have been barred from publishing the ultimatum.
New York February 5 crowds packed exits at Bloomingdale's on the upper east side when a man believed to be an Indian drew a pistol and shot himself near a busy counter causing a panic among late day shoppers.

A five year old girl, Margaret Csordas, was killed when a one man street car struck her at Park Avenue and Gregory Street. Motorman John Dooley was arrested on a manslaughter charge after claiming he could not avoid the collision. The body was dragged fifteen feet before removal. In a separate incident eleven year old Edward Keefe received a probable skull fracture when an auto hit him at Hancock Avenue and Fairfield Avenue. He was taken to Bridgeport Hospital with fractures to his wrist and left knee.
