Canaan May Lose Gretna Green Status in State
Hartford February 5 The town of Canaan and neighboring towns near New York or Massachusetts have acted as Gretna Green for couples seeking marriage by waiving the five days notice required for non residents. Attorney General Hinman rules such waivers cannot be treated as public policy and the practice may cease. J Lee Ensing town clerk of Canaan sought a definitive ruling from Dr. John T. Black health commissioner. The attorney general emphasizes that considerations about the marrying parties alone do not govern public policy.
