The United States Shipping Board steamer Conejos sank in the Black Sea during a violent gale. Six officers and about thirty seamen were aboard. radio calls for help went unanswered as lifeboats were swamped, and rescuers found no trace of the vessel or its crew.

Long before city workers come in, motorists queue outside the State Department of Motor Vehicles on State Street to obtain 1924 markers. Only about 4,000 of 80,000 issued to date. no 1923 markers will be recognized after midnight. Thousands expected today, but output limited to about 600 due to clerical work. Office hours 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., closed tomorrow.
London reports the Labor party may appoint Lord Haldane to Washington but Sir Auckland Geddes resigns and Sir Hume Howard, ambassador to Spain, will be moved to Madrid with Sir Horace Rumboll to Madrid. Howard, who will become ambassador to Washington, has long diplomatic service including postings in Rome Vienna Berlin and Crete.
Sir Auckland Geddes announces resignation as British ambassador to Washington due to eye health risks. He plans a month in Washington to bid personal farewell to American officials, then rest in England. He will not resume official duties but will observe pending ties between Britain and the United States.
The Board of Home Missions and Church Extensions pledged to assume up to 20000 of the Summersfield MM B church debt, with efforts to raise 8000 more locally. Builder William F. Chetlos obtained judgment to foreclose on the church and parsonage as total debts near 75900, following the removal of Rev Charles A. Quigley amid charges of extravagance.

An icebound Park avenue crash at Henham avenue left Alex Ivalvaitis uninjured but shaken after his Lafayette street car hit a pole.
Virginia Gordon 18, niece of Mrs. Robert Hincks of this city, died in St Paul Minnesota after an accidental contact with electric light current while bathing. Mrs C W Gordon of St Paul, mother of the girl and sister of Mrs Hincks, was visiting here and left for the west yesterday morning. The incident occurred when the electric current grounded in the bath water, instantly killing the girl who had been visiting Bridgeport on several occasions.
In New York the injured actress Dorothea Antel, crippled four years ago by a theatre fall, received a blessing letter, a rosary, and a medal from Pope Pius XI via Rome. Antel, who supports herself by selling magazines, lives in her uptown apartment.
Representative Cater of Texas accuses an organized conspiracy to coerce senators and representatives to back the Mellon tax bill before lawmakers review its provisions. The charge, issued by the Democratic National Committee, claims predatory interests spread telegrams and letters from one source to influence Congress, pressuring lawmakers prior to study. The US Coast and Geodetic Steamer Guide completed an oceanographic cruise begun November 19 at New London. Capt. R. P. Luce said data will correct hydrographic charts. The vessel sounded the deepest ocean area 200 miles north of the Puerto Rican canal, unwinding 4500 fathoms of wire. Temperature readings and ocean bottom samples were collected for study in Washington.
Frank Logal Madej, a local factory boss, lured his estranged wife to Tassaic New Jersey where she walked with another man and was killed. Police report four children and a theft of $1200 plus family jewelry from the husband’s relatives. The event follows reports of modernist debates and religious figures weighing in on daily life and education.
Frank Mader admits remorse and says he did not kill Revel with whom his spouse fled the home, taking four children. Authorities cite the confession amid ongoing investigation and custody tensions surrounding the family.
Frank Mader 37 of 728 Stillman street killed his wife Josephine 33 in Garfield New Jersey while she walked with her lover Constance Gromadski 31 from 762 Hallett street. Mader admitted premeditation and is held without bail on first degree murder charges. Gromadzki fled the scene with four children under temporary Garfield protection as authorities sought witnesses and aid from local clergy and police.
Nicholas Bope faced a midnight street assault on Madison avenue near Lincolty avenue. The assailant demanded money and struck with a blackjack, but Bope fought back, leaving the would be robber to flee empty handed. Police searched the area without success. Bope was treated for head and facial injuries at D A Bernstein's office.
