Manjak Becomes Tough Oil Field Preservative
Manjak or manjanak is rapidly used in Trinidad oil fields as a preservative for metals due to its toughness insulating properties heat resistance and water and air imperviousness. It resembles nearly pure bitumen similar to asphalt but melts only above 400 F. It is nearly carbon free with hydrogen and small sulphur content. It looks like coal is odorless hard brittle and separates in long grain. When melted it forms a rubber like coating suitable for painting pipelines boilers sprockets and other ironware. It is notably effective on oil drilling equipment and brine submerged cans and related machinery.
