The National Safety Council warned 490 Americans may die in motor vehicle crashes during the four day New Year weekend after a Christmas toll that surpassed 700. Final Christmas counts showed 705 traffic deaths, 54 fires, 124 other accidents for an 883 total.

Elton G. Rogers 66 of 78 Crown Street a former vice president of Producto Machine and member of the Board of Park Commissioners died at 10:30 a.m. yesterday while being moved to Bridgeport Hospital after months of illness. Born in Bridgeport he was a native of the city and had served in local public roles.
Four people died and about 10,000 were left homeless as eastern Mindanao endured one of its worst floods. AP reports the disaster struck on December 27 sparking a regional relief effort.
Barbara Denney a Westport divorcee files a 100000 breach of promise suit in Superior court against Peter Elgar a New York producer. Denney claims she accepted a marriage proposal on Sept 17 1956 and he now refuses to marry her after a reasonable time. Denney aged about 28 says she was ready and willing to wed.
A tall auburn haired woman in San Francisco left an anonymous white envelope at the American Cancer Society reception desk. Inside was a note promising secrecy and $7,000 in currency, later reported to be $7,900 total. Executive Director John F. O’Brien confirmed the cash handoff and immediate receipt.
Samuel H. Cohn, 65, of 52 Lenox Street, was shot in the head and killed alone in his Package store in East Hartford around 8:30 p.m. Police reported an empty cash register and a lack of clues. The case echoes a recent spree, linking a New Britain pair and a Hartford tailor shot the same night.

Detectives stopped a youth as he exited Sacred Heart church on Myrtle avenue at 2 p.m. yesterday and recovered envelopes from a candle box near the altar. The suspect, 17 year old Charles H. Keegan of 15 Hallett street, fled but was chased by Detectives Alexander Wicek and James Kerwin after observing the exit.
Cairo reports Egypt is reneging on the UN backed six point Suez settlement plan. An Egyptian source blames the British French assault for the move, noting the principles included nondiscriminatory transit for all ships and canal insulation.
