Stratford Man Is Arrested For Deserting Front Line Duty
Private John Edward Hainsworth 29, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hainsworth of Stratford, was arrested on order of Canadian military authorities after returning from six months overseas with the Fourth Canadian Railway regiment. He admitted desertion, saying he and a comrade left a military police detail in Montreal and transferred to the railway regiment to go overseas. He had been spending a 17 day pass with his parents after arriving from England on the transport Olympic on December 14. He previously failed to enlist in 102d Infantry at City Hall Green due to poor eyesight and tried twice more to join US regulars, both rejected. Two of his brothers serve in the American navy.

Sergeant George Tiurros aged 23 served four years in the U S Navy and enlisted in the regular Army eighteen months ago to join the first division in France. He was wounded October 4 at the Battle of the Monse, fought in base Metse, and claimed his first German as a windpipe wound. He suffered machine gun wounds to the arch. General Pershing praised the regulars first division for high morale. Private Joseph Goanelli of Company Hoo, 102nd Infantry, died of lobar pneumonia in France on December 10.

Girls Held As Police Probe Man And Woman
Laura Kimberly of 44 Clinton avenue and Steve S. Sadolr, a roomer, were taken into custody with two 16 year old girls from New York held as material witnesses. The woman faces a disorderly house charge while Sadak is held on a breach of peace technical charge. Patrolman J Murphy of the Third precinct booked and took them in. The woman released on $50 bond.
