Hickman Tries Death in Pendleton Cell Then Reaches California

William Edward Hickman, held in Pendleton on kidnap and murder charges, twice attempted suicide in his jail cell using a handkerchief and a bunk, as officials moved him toward Los Angeles. A large Pendleton crowd gathered at the station to see the transfer, praising local officers who captured him.

Two Girls Injured in Turnpike Crash Near Milford

Two girls were seriously injured in a collision on the turnpike about a mile east of Milford at 10:05 p.m. last night. They were taken to Milford hospital. Three youths hold up girl near Horvarhs druj and Baxk avenues

A girl was robbed at dawn by three young men on Mins Tene Barano and Wor din avenue near Horvarhs druj. The assailants used a handkerchief to cover their faces and fled with money. Police report the suspects are unknown and the victim is cooperating.

Wife Identifies Man Fatally Hurt On Christmas Eve

Mrs Magdik identified the deceased as her husband at St Vincents hospital after a car struck him near Ellsworth street and Fairfield avenue on Christmas Eve. The couple’s daughters Marion and Millia, aged nine and seven, waited at home as Christmas gifts lay under the tree. The tragedy unfolded as police traced a missing man to the unidentified victim and notified the family.

Veteran Telephone Worker Miss Glinn Wheeler Dies

Miss Glinn Wheeler, a 33 year Southern New England Telephone employee, died yesterday morning at Bridgeport Hospital from gallbladder disease. A longtime instructor in Bridgeport’s phone district, she began work when the company opened a local branch in 1905. Survived by an aunt and three cousins, the funeral will be at Wuimel and West Tac with time to be announced. She was a member of Olivet Congregational Church and the Telephone Employees council.

Woman’s suicide attempt foiled by gas exposure

Mrs Mayette Eisenman twenty one of 4 Santa Blaice attempted death by gas yesterday morning in her kitchen. James Kyte janitor detected gas emanating from the apartment, found her unconscious, and alerted police and a ambulance crew. He moved her to St Vincents hospital, where officials later said no record of her admission.

Post Santa Claus Visits Needy Children Here

Bridgeport Post led its fourteenth annual crusade against the tragedy of the Empty Stocking with readers’ aid. Toys clothing and food were delivered to hundreds of poor Bridgeport children as Santa Claus visited homes on Christmas Day and the Post organized volunteers to pack and distribute gifts starting Friday night and continuing into Saturday.

Navy divers praised for S-4 disaster rescue efforts

Philadelphia dispatch reports Secretary Curtis Wilbur of the Navy lauding the divers who handled the S-4 salvage scene. He noted 15 dives on the Falcon and praised the Navy’s training. He said civilian aids and safety-device ideas were considered and that large cranes and derricks would be used as needed to manage the 750 ton submarine.

Man Killed Two Hurt In Greenwich Accident

Greenwich December 2. One man was killed and two others seriously injured when the automobile left the road and r a tele communication pole. Stephen Misciley, twenty five, died at Greenwich Hospital. Albert Quinn and Jereee Spaheate were reported in critical condition. Lemar 1le in Stamiora Sakala was the driver and held for inquiry. The wrecked machine was the last of three autos in a party driving to White Plains.

Family of Five Flee Flames On Christmas Morning Fire

A house fire in Oronoque involving the Three Maples led to five family members escaping after their police dog Otto barked to wake them. Harold Chase twenty five sustained a minor arm wound. George Rowntree twenty two narrowly escaped when flames surged as he opened the living room door. Ruth and Mrs Rowntree, Mr Rowntree, and the dog were saved by a neighbor’s ladder. the home was a total loss within 90 minutes. Otto is credited with saving five lives though Jack the bull terrier could not be rescued. Insurance partially covers the damage.

Body Found in Cottage After Thanksgiving Disappearance

Milford dec 25 a special cor respondent reports the body of Robert Cutler a 49 year old Myrtle Beach restaurant owner found at 4 30 pm today in an empty cottage near his restaurant at Pole 106 illuminating. Gas from a stove jet caused death by gas while a note and dream sequence accompany the investigation.

Deckhand Drowns After Fall From Pequonock Boat

A deckhand named McFall aboard the fregata John M Worth fell from the bow into the Pequonock. Crew and rescue teams struggled with CPR and rescue efforts but he died aboard the vessel. The body was later taken to the morgue pending medical examination.

Six Guests Missing as Hotel Burns in Hopewell

Six persons are believed dead and several were injured when a fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Grand Central hotel, a three story brick building in Hopewell. The hotel register burned, hindering counts. about fifty names were on it though many guests had left for Christmas. Names unaccounted for include Charles Cocke and Luther Hammond of Hopewell, Mr and Mrs Blaude of South Carolina, a Virginia man Ridenbush, and Mr Sanburn of Massachusetts. Fire officials feared two days would pass before the search concluded. Firemen rescued many on the third floor and two rooms on the second floor escaped evacuation. The hotel was valued at about 60,000 with furniture stored on the first floor valued at 160,000.

Simon Called Peter author Robert Keable dies in Tahiti

Announced today that Robert Keable author of Simon Called Peter and other novels died in Tahiti from Brights disease. Keable, English writer known for religious fiction, passed away in the South Pacific after an illness reported by brief dispatches.
