Submarine 8-16 Is Launched At Lake Torpedo Yard
The submarine S-16, 231 feet long with a 14 foot draft and 1,500 ton submerged displacement, slid into the sea at Lake Torpedo Boat yards amid flags and Christmas decor. Mrs Archibald McNeil Jr sponsored the launch, champagne bottle broke on bow, cheers erupted, and tugs Robert McAllister and Isia towed her to the slip for fitting out. Secretary Daniels could not attend. Santa Claus and the Lincoln school drums led a procession as crowds watched and Bill Steinke led singing. Manager Brill presented Mrs McNeil with a miniature of the 16.
