A Roadside Reverie of Chippendale Chairs in Our Avenue
The narrator recounts moving his prized antique Chippendale chairs and Nell Gwyn desk to a new Our Avenue villa, only to face ridicule from Laburnum Lodge’s Miss Pinder and the prying neighbors. He contrasts his refined possessions with the mock-straightforwardness of the new, stuccoed row and endures the comic misgivings of his housekeeper Bundle and others as the road’s early chaos unfolds.
