The Bridgeport club schedules a Thursday meeting January 7 to discuss changes in living conditions and the impact of prohibition effective January 16. Leaders aim to inform members about future effects on clubs, venues, and habits while highlighting the club’s strong finances and open events around New Year and January 7.
City hall officials plan a December 24 gathering in the council room at 2:30 p.m. Each attendee brings a gift plus a toy for a needy child in the city. Refreshments will be served. The organizing committee includes Mrs. Width M. Fitzpatrick, Miss Adelaide T. Bedizor, and Miss Anna McKelvey.
Bolshevik forces captured a key junction on the Kana-Siberia line near Talga. Trains moving west of Talga disrupted as Polish troops withdraw. Novo Nikolaevsk fell after a local Bolshevik uprising as Polish troops withdrew. Trkutsk remains quiet as Kolchak plans eastward movements.
Riga reports say Russo-German forces under Colonel Avaloff Bermondt evacuated Lithuania on December 14. Troops allegedly plundered widely as Allied mission officers failed to prevent seizure and loot. Brigadier General Sherwood Chenex and the inter Allied team, now in Riga, expect to return to Paris by January 1.
In Berlin hotel keepers threaten a general food strike starting January 6 if demands over food regulations are not met. Citizens form clubs to stockpile provisions as Mayor Wermuth holds conferences with purveyors to decide limits. Protests from foreign missions press the government for concessions.
At the annual meeting of the Fifth district Democratic club officers for the ensuing year were elected. President William H. McCombs vice president M H Small secretary J Cl Byrnes treasurer RD Keefe and board of governors A D Veness and J F Moongrain. Plans were laid for a pinochle tournament among city Democratic clubs and the birth district club will hold open house at 869 Poplar Street on New Year’s Eve inviting members and friends.
Paris and Lille will host trials of war crime suspects in 1920. Lille court martial has issued warrants against German officers and soldiers, with a captain and four lieutenants imprisoned in Lille fort. A Brussels dispatch reports Holland has officially refused to deliver former Emperor William for trial.
Negotiations begin today among General Yudenitch of the Northwestern Russian army General Elevant of the Froeneh army Foreign Minister Pip of Estonia and Lettish officials over the disbandment and asylum for Yudenitch troops. The situation grows dire as Estonians on the Narva front fall back disarming retreat imminent.
