BHA Raises Rents for Two State Housing Projects

Bridgeport Housing Authority approves a $10.28 monthly rent hike effective Feb 1 for over 1,200 tenants in Beardsley Terrace and Pequonnock Apartments. Non subsidized state developments bear costs through tenant income, with over income tenants facing about 26 percent of gross income in set rents and evictions already begun for roughly 250 tenants.

Occasional rain and cooler temperatures forecast for Bridgeport

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. moves to back the 8,500 depositors of Home National Bank of Exenville New York after a $1.3 million shortage led to its closure. A new national bank will open December 21, with deposits insured up to the legal limit as plans to raise $1.05 million capitalization proceed.

Snowflake Queen crowned at UB Christmas Ball

Lois Prentice, 20, of Bridgeport, was named Snowflake Queen at the University of Bridgeport Christmas Ball held at the Ritz ballroom. About 1,500 students and alumni attended as seven finalists were chosen from 22 semi-finalists with Sigma Omicron sponsoring the event. Youths Named Finalists for Annapolis Appointment

Six Bridgeport youths from the North End and Orcutt Boys clubs were named finalists by a Board committee from 18 applicants for admission to the Naval Academy at Annapolis. Sleet Storm Dashes Through State Knocking Out Power

A sleet and freezing rain storm battered the state causing widespread power outages in Fairfield County with 1000 homes in Redding and Ridgefield cut off. The Weather Bureau warned of another system from Texas possibly hitting late today or Sunday morning amid icy road dangers and scattered outages in Danbury and Monroe.
