East India Co Head Absent In Bankruptcy Probe
Disappearance of William Jt Bensel president and general manager of the East India Company prompted an involuntary bankruptcy case. Testimony before Special Commissioner Jacob Klein revealed Bensel had been subpoenaed, reportedly left the city, and that creditors and merchants such as Morris Salit faced concerns over payments and inflated pricing. Witnesses described Rug purchases and substantial debts, with notes owed to Cohen and the New York Furniture Company.
