Merrimack's Power Spurs Energy Hopes in Lowell Plan
In Lowell Massachusetts the Merrimack River’s old wheel and canal system is being studied for reactivation to ease the energy crisis. Four wheel generators once powered city factories and lighting and two dozen others sit idle. A 1792 company owns the wheels and plans consider damming to access the spare 2,500 kilowatts to serve about 4,500 homes, with potential to power city buildings and streets in a revived Industrial age effort.
