Canadian ace Mackenzie freed after two years in Red China

Squadron Leader Andrew R Mackenzie, the Canadian ace shot down in Korea, arrived in Hong Kong after two years in captivity. He said American prisoners were in the camp but did not disclose names or numbers. Mackenzie, credited with 812 enemy planes, crossed the Yalu under a bamboo curtain on the anniversary of his capture.

Five Children Die In Franklin Farmhouse Fire

Five children aged up to seven perished when their home on Lincoln Street in Franklin burned. Reginald De Baggis, 34, is named as their father. A witness described bodies being removed in hampers as firefighters from nearby towns battled the smoldering blaze at the farm home.

Archbishop OBrien receives pallium in Hartford ceremony

In Hartford on December 5 Archbishop Henry J OBrien became the first Connecticut-born prelate to receive the pallium at St Joseph Cathedral. Cardinal Spellman conferred the liturgical emblem signaling his metropolitan authority as clergy, dignitaries, and about 2000 worshippers attended.

Westporter Arrested Over Police Captain Badge Incident

A New York badge maker, Henry Pommier, 42, of North Avenue Westport, was arrested for breach of the peace after flashing a gold Police Captain badge to a policeman who stopped him for reckless driving on Fast Avenue. The badge, inscribed Captain New York Police, prompted an examination and bond posting of $25 for December 20 City Court appearance.

Socialists win in West Berlin city elections

West Berlin voters gave the Socialists a clear lead in the 127 seat city parliament with 44 percent, while the Christian Democrats and Free Democrats trailed. Communists were shut out for the first time since 1946, amid a push for unity against extremism. CDU and SPD seek coalitions, with Adenauer’s bloc gaining at the Free Democrats’ expense. Pontiff Pius XII Broadcasts Benediction From Rome

Vatican dispatch reports Pope Pius XII, appearing stronger after a brief rest, delivered a benediction via microphone to the people of Rome. Westport Cops Injured In High Speed Chase Crash

Two Westport police officers were injured when their cruiser crashed into a tree and a fleeing car struck a fire hydrant during a six mile chase on Shore Road Route 136. The driver, Charles S Webster 17 of Fanton Hill Weston, was arrested on seven charges. Teens in the second car escaped unhurt. Both officers were treated at Norwalk hospital and released.

Plane crash kills 3 prisoners slug Bruce Campbell

A 24 year old Army officer from Tarchmont New York and summer resident of Fairfield since childhood was killed when an Army Signal Corps plane crashed near Las Vegas New Mexico. Bruce Campbell son of Mr and Mrs William Campbell grandson of Mrs John Demuth of Fairfield Beach died Friday along with the other officer in the crash. Campbell had begun active duty last year after graduation from Carrier College and ROTC. He had been stationed in Arizona about a week ago.

Seventh Child Born After Milford Car Crash Injures Woman

A Milford woman severely injured when her car left Bridgeport avenue and a hedge, then plunged to Route 1, gave birth to a healthy 11 pound girl at Milford Hospital. Mrs. Morrrissey, mother of six, had been unconscious after the accident and was treated for a skull fracture. her husband was charged with reckless driving and released on bond. Florida double murder shocks Stamford couple at home

Dominick Albanizio and Evelyn Campbell Mead, living together in Hollywood Florida, were slain in their night clothes in a dawn attack.
