Navy to decide today on sending body eight to Paris

General Edwards to Speak in Bridgeport December 17

Gen Edwards will arrive in Bridgeport December 1 and speak at a Four-minute men gathering about the division exploits. Justice Wheeler will chair the meeting and other war veterans will lecture during the business session. Postal Co. Seeks to Block Cable Lines Takeover

New York December 4. The Commercial Cable Company filed an injunction suit today to stop Postmaster General Burleson from taking control of the company's marine cable system. The complaint, by Charles E. Hughes and William W. Cook, warns of irreparable damage if the action proceeds. Continued on Page Two.

Senators Told How Jess Was Bought

Ashington December 4 Alexander Konta of New York admitted before a Senate committee that he conspired with Dr Bernard Dernberg German propagator to purchase a New York newspaper hostile to prohibition for publicity. He wrote to Dr Kerg on the matter and claimed the aim was to aid Dr Dembers the paper to sway American opinion. The inquiry probes brewers and German influence in press before U S entry. Rabinowitz Returns on Northern Pacific Steamer

Private Morris Rabinownta with Company Hy 316th Infantry, wounded in action on September 99, returned to the United States aboard the Northern Pacific, arriving in New York Sunday. He wrote to Joseph Thackwray in The Brunswick confirming his arrival. Inducted May 24, he once ran a news stand with his brother at Middle Street and Fairfield Avenue and was well known in the city center.

Mrs. Catherine Bentley Dies After Fainting Spell

Mrs. Catherine Bentley of 1124 Park Avenue, wife of musician George Bentley, died yesterday afternoon after fainting at home. Found on the floor by her daughter, she had been active in fraternal circles and was about 45 years old.

Connecticut Gave .013 of Entire Army

Connecticut furnished 44,900 men for the army during mobilization, the War Department report shows. Pair Who Eloped On Armistice Day Caught in Chicago

A Bridgeport pair who eloped on Armistice Day were found in Chicago after circulars had nationwide police broadcasts. Mrs Leadadia Micholawski and Wladyslaw Dembbski, each leaving spouses and children, are held for desertion. Bridgeport police notify the local prosecutor. The couple, the wife soon to be a mother, face Chicago court action.

Glass May Accept Treasury Portfolio

Washington December 4 Representative Carter Glass of Virginia, chairman of the House Banking and Currency committee, is understood to have been offered the post of secretary of the treasury by President Wilson. Nomination to the Senate is expected if he accepts. Secretary McAdoo’s resignation would take effect on the appointment, with Glass to assume as successor upon confirmation.

Swiss to Transport Rastatt Prisoners

The Swiss government offers to provide fully equipped trains to transport 2300 American soldiers from the German Rastatt prison camp to the French border. The move, arranged through the American Red Cross in Switzerland, will have the prisoners moved to France via Switzerland.

Red Cross to Open Citywide Membership Drive Dec 14

Bridgeport’s American Red Cross chapter announces a citywide membership drive starting December 14 to enroll every resident. A mass meeting will feature Dr. David Hughes recounting his experiences as chaplain to the Welsh Fusiliers. The executive committee and workers meet to outline plans with district canvassing and a goal to enroll all men women and children. Official headquarters opened at Broad and John streets.

Lake Co Worker Killed On Devon Bridge

William L. Allen 22 or 23 years old was struck and killed instantly by an eastbound train on the railroad bridge over the Sousatonie river near Devon. Allen, employed at the Lake Submarine Boat plant in Bridgeport, was walking to his rooming house after work. The engineer did not see him in the darkness and the entire train passed over him. Medical examiner Dr. L. J. Pons ordered the body taken to the morgue awaiting relatives. Police seek to locate his family. Allen may have lived in Norwich prior to coming to Devon.

Nugent Wounded in Action July 12 in France

Word reaches Nugent sisters that Private Nugent of Company C, 3rd Army Division, infantry, was severely wounded on July 12 while serving in France. A Bridgeport native, 26, he had prior stomach illness and worked at Crane Company before being drafted in September 1917. He moved from Camp Devens to Camp Greene then to France in April.

Two Examiners To Aid Winters In Labors Here

Jaseph McCoy of St Louis and Willard J Aborn of Olive land Ohio arrived in Rigport to assist Alpheus Winters in the office. Both men have held the same position elsewhere and will handle the large daily workload. McCoy supervised awards for Mason Machine employees at Baunton Massachusetts. Aborn handled Bethlehem Steel Company cases there.

Young Slayer Evans Confesses Holdups and Murders

In Hoboken a young man Evans and accomplice Strasser confessed to numerous hold ups and robberies from Deer Island to Bridgeport. Evans admitted pulling many jobs, using force, and later killed a Hoboken officer during a confrontation. The pair drifted south, met a girl, and the jealousy led to their unraveling. The arrest followed after Evans shot and killed a member of the Hoboken police.

Five Bridgeport Men Discharged By Army Camps

Five Bridgeport men returned home to civilian life after honorable discharges. J By Stanley of 726 Pembroke street Metin Hoddinott of St Ogden street and two companions arrived from Camp Devens with discharge papers. Silas Dowson came home from Camp Devon and will resume work at Spits Textile. Hoddinott to be re employed at Salis Textile plant after Canadian service.

An earthquake struck northern Chile damaging Copiapo and Vallenar. Copiapo reports show 10 percent of buildings destroyed and several deaths. many residents homeless.
