Stratford Referendum on Zoning Sees High Drama
Hartford area reports a woman wounded in a church shooting tied to a marriage elopement in Rocky Mount North Carolina. Police say David McCall of East Hartford fired at Estelle Melanson then shot himself near the altar in St Justin's church, later dying in hospital. Stratford voters will decide tomorrow whether Section 76 remains in the town zoning rules governing liquor establishments, a move that sparked a long dispute between the town council and residents. The Referendum turnout will use paper ballots with Yes or No on keeping the section, with polling places open 8 am to 6 pm. The issue has tied to fears liquor outlets near homes and the town's planning board stance that the section is too restrictive for future zoning changes. Strong community opposition from Lordship Improvement Association and clergy helped drive the referendum campaign.
