GE Engineer Wins 875 Puzzle Pot in Nine-Year Run

General Electric engineer Joseph W. Clark Jr, 97, of Bridgeport claimed the $875 jackpot in the Sun- Way Post puzzle contest after years of persistent play. Clark, a longtime GE staffer credited with creating new products, began solving similar syndicated puzzles in Fort Wayne in 1953 and finally reached the winning solution this week.

A-Ship Destroyer Near Collision at Hampton Roads

In Norfolk Virginia the nuclear ship Savannah nearly collided with the destroyer Scheckell as the Savannah entered Hampton Roads. The two feet distance near 6 40 a m was described by Commodore Gaston F DeGroote who said the destroyer came out of the channel. Savannah with 24 passengers docked from Savannah Georgia to take ballast. No passengers reported witnessing the near miss.

Shapero Reveals Jail Abuse In Albany Demonstration

Rabbi Sanford M. Shapero described his Albany jail experience as primitive and filthy after arrest in the Albany protest. Murray Hawley Succumbs at 48 in Toronto

Murray Hawley 48, once America's youngest licensed pilot in 1930, died in Toronto Canada. The Oakville Ontario native was Bridgeport area’s first solo coast to coast flyer, son of late Dr George W Hawley, Bridgeport physician and inventor. He earned his pilot license after three weeks of instruction and later flew commercially for United Air Lines Howard Aircraft and Canadian Continental Airways, also working as a test pilot for Lockheed Boeing and Ford.

Dense clouds from a container of concentrated sulphuric acid vented in the yard of the General Chemical Corporation at 024 Wordin Avenue. Fire officials reported the incident at 3:00 p.m. yesterday.
