Police believe two men found shot near Chicago were bootleggers targeted in a gang dispute. Investigators note the crime occurred along a rural road outside the city with no immediate arrests. Witnesses describe a gray sedan speed away after gunfire.
Irving Schling known as the flying bootlegger and Harry Berman were found shot in the back near Ashburn field, with Schling’s car dumped in a lagoon after the slayings. Police suspect they were killed after a ride and dumped to conceal the crime, possibly linked to liquor drops from Canada and a Parkway hotel sale controversy.
Lillian Nanele, five daughter of Mr and Mrs William Gangle of 35 Allen Street Stratford, is in critical condition at Bridgeport hospital with third degree burns after near an outdoor bonfire. Edmund Lowrey, who warned her, rushed to help but she was engulfed in flames. Stratford ambulance transported her to hospital in critical condition.
Alderman W Sterling Clark of the Third district announces he will not seek renomination. Clark, elected two years ago, distanced from the King organization and led efforts in earlier primary battles. A regrouping meeting of known leaders in the district is planned for next week to map a new fight.
George H Wright of Huntington West Virginia won the grand prize as the best dressed man at the National Association of Retail Clothing Merchants convention in Chicago. He admitted changing his clothes eighteen times in one day to showcase his wardrobe.
Governor Smith and Senator Walker pressed the mayoral race into Queens after a sharp Brooklyn speech. Mayor Hylan named Arnold Rothstein and Thomas Chadbourne as figures influencing Tammany Hall. Olvany denied knowing Rothstein or Chadbourne and warned against falsehoods amid party infighting.

Alan Tompkins seventeen son of Mr and Mrs Edwin De Voe Tompkins of 106 Park avenue was elected president of the Connecticut association of the Citizens Military Training Camp at Camp Devens. Corporal John Coolidge of Company C was chosen president of the Massachusetts CT Camp. Tompkins, of Company M machine gun squad, is in his second year at camp and recently graduated Bridgeport High School in June 1924. He studied another year at the same school and plans to enter Columbia University in September to study engineering.
Finance Minister Caillaux plans to offer Secretary Mellon seventy million dollars a year for sixty two years to settle France war debt of about four point two one billion dollars. The proposal would total seventy six million dollars annually and include twenty million dollars France now pays on surplus American war stocks. If accepted a nominal French debt commission would visit Washington to draft details, though doubt remains about its practical arrival.
New York August 28 AP tentative proposals outline a merger of Otis Steel Trumbull Steel and Midland Steel Products forming a new company with a capital structure of about 95 million in seven percent preferred stock 1760009 no par value common shares and 1260000 new six percent bonds plus a 17.5 million bond issue to remain outstanding J Kulas of Cleveland president of Otis and Midland would lead the new corporation as bankers and officials meet to finalize terms.
President Calvin Coolidge toured Plymouth Mass during a coastal voyage aboard his yacht on August 28. He stopped at Daniel Webster’s grave near Marshfield, dined in Cohasset with Wall Street Journal publisher C W Barron, and planned an overnight at White Court before inspecting the Citizens Military Training Camp at Camp Devers. Accompanied by Mrs Coolidge, Mrs Sanders, Col Cheney, and Maj Coupal, the President began the return voyage from Marblehead.

Joseph Sydiskis, 45, of 405 Poplar Street, was hospitalized at St Vincent’s after his wife Mary Sydiskis, 45, struck him with a broken glass during a kitchen quarrel this afternoon. Mary Sydiskis was held at the Third Precinct on an assault charge with bonds of 200 dollars.
The MacMillan Arctic expedition resumes southward travel after a difficult voyage. In Messina Bay the ships Bowdoin and Peary found open water and reduced ice delaying plans. Officials hope to reach Umanak tonight and conduct valuable Greenland Labrador exploration with Navy and National Geographic backing. If weather holds, the Peary may remain for airplane flights before continuing south.

Final arrangements for payment of the tax on motion picture films by distributors were made at a New Haven conference between Tax Commissioner William H Blodgett and industry representatives. The agreement obligates theatre owners to reimburse distributors for timely tax payments and maintains current admission prices. registrations will be done at Boston and New York agencies with taxes paid from company records checked by a new special agent under John J Splath. The agent Hiram Sprain will supervise this work with A Nelson Frazier of West Haven serving in motion picture roles.

Fort Wayne police and Justice Department operatives questioned Charles Murphy alias Charles Farmer about the whereabouts of wanted gangster Anderson. Murphy was arrested after a midnight dash to Lake Webster where Anderson was said to be hiding. He is believed to be a go-between for the Chapman Anderson gang and was arraigned on a technical loitering charge.
The Pas Manitoba reports Mrs F Clay wife of a mounted police sergeant at Chesterfield Inlet was mauled by fifteen huskies more than a month ago. She was terribly torn and rescued by Mrs Ulay but died from injuries.
Federal investigators charge Mackinac master George W McVay and chief engineer John A Grant with negligence after the August 18 explosion off Newport that killed 52. Trial is set for September 2 before steamboat inspectors in Providence. If convicted, licenses as navigators may be revoked and state charges may follow. McVay allegedly moved the vessel from Pawtucket despite unsafe boilers. Grant allegedly allowed boilers to become unsafe.
President John L. Lewis announced an agreement with operators that maintenance men will continue at work during the suspension starting September 1. The pact covers districts 1, 7, and 9 United Mine Workers and preserves maintenance positions without replacement during idle periods.
