Washington August 26 Secretary Colby signed the proclamation declaring the women suffrage amendment to be part of the Constitution of the United States. The quiet act followed Tennessee’s ratification and was framed as a simple solemn announcement rather than a ceremony.
Figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a measurable rise in the cost of staple goods in the United States from December 1919 to June this year. Food, clothing, housing, fuel, furniture, and miscellaneous items all show substantial percentage increases across eighteen principal items.
Washington reports indications that living costs have started to fall with prices of commodities dropping aside from food. The Federal Reserve Board notes a downward trend in prices, reduced speculation, slight gains in efficiency, and a push to curb extravagant spending and borrowing. It also cites a sustained move to pay off government and other bonds and securities.
The 1823 report in Sea and Shore predicts the United States will command the most powerful navy by 1983 with 52 heavy battleships and ten light cruisers. It claims Britain cannot match this power and cites Admiralty chief Long and Navy Secretary Dentels as endorsing sea supremacy.
Paris August 26 Allied officers at Marshal Fochs headquarters say the Polish campaign is virtually ended for heavy fighting. They discuss where Polish armies should halt and entrench with the center identified as the weak spot needing a forty to fifty kilometer advance beyond the Versailles line to the Pripot marshes edge.
Republican caucuses across Fairfield county last night chose delegates to state, congressional, and senatorial conventions. Wilson won Norwalk delegates, Ridgefield women failed to vote per Attorney General Healey ruling, Bridgeport caucus secrecy withheld names of delegates, and Norwalk senatorial delegates favored Candee and Tammany shifting to Candee for harmony.
The Socialist paper Le Peuple reports Belgian ministers have arrived at Antwerp and decided not to let the American steamer Marcella depart the harbor with munitions bound for Poland.
In Stratford Aug 29 insurgent forces won a caucus battle electing Abram Wellington as permanent chairman over Eliott W. Pook. The Old Guard faction announced plans to push delegates to state and national conventions, naming leaders for state and federal posts while vowing to run distinct slate.
In Marion Aug 26 Senator Harding discussed European leaders' views on America’s role in the peace settlement. Myron T. Herrick reported Europeans favor a Republican approach and would welcome Harding’s peace proposals including a world court plan.
Governor Cox of Ohio charged at a Pittsburgh meeting that a Republican campaign fund over 15 million dollars was being raised to "buy the presidency." He cited an Upham bulletin and a typewritten list showing quotas in 51 cities across 27 states totaling 8.145 million dollars.
Bridgeport Republican Ballard rejected claims of a 60000 dollar quota set by the national committee to aid Birding's election. He said only about 1000 dollars has been raised so far and the fund is just beginning to mobilize. Evidence suggests the national body set higher targets as motivation. Ballard noted the fund does not yet approach thousands in reality.
Henry Sullivan of Lowell Massachusetts fought 18 hours in choppy Channel waters attempting a England to France crossing. Exhausted, he drifted into a boat within three miles of his goal after a long fraught swim.

London reports the death of Cock in Brixton mayor MacSweney is expected within hours and predicted to unleash a vast reprisal campaign against nine leading Irish figures. Cork sends confirmation of intense unrest across southern Ireland as Sinn Fein and Irish leaders condemn British authorities. Arthur O Brien says Sinn Fein in London fears Lloyd George refuses intervention.
A city police crackdown on twenty minute parking limits led to 64 arrests across Bridgeport area zones. Police say offenses carry up to 60 dollars fine with many residents from multiple towns among the detainees. Twenty nine drivers plus local workers await arraignment in city court today amid a wave of warrants and clerical preparation.
Bridgeport residents faced summons for violating a new no parking ordinance that limits curb time to twenty minutes. Travelers Insurance investigator Hatfield urged amending the rule to avoid court actions while Kiwanis members and shoppers were among those cited on Broad Street and nearby avenues. About 600 Bridgeport Democrats will travel to New Haven for a big rally at the Hyperion theatre at 8 pm where Gov. James M. Cox of Ohio, the Democratic presidential nominee, will speak. An afternoon statewide gathering features 16 local Democrats at 1 pm with a shore dinner to follow and further remarks by Cox.
Augusta Me Aug 23 Governor Milken announced a special session of the legislature to enact legislation enabling women to register in time to vote at the state election on September 13. The call cites suffrage amendment ratification and timing concerns for the September election.
