Miners and operators split as talks stall in Hazelton

In Hazelton Pennsylvania a miners committee proposed renewed talks if operators would commit to not press for higher costs. Operators refused citing the risk of higher coal prices. John L Lewis signaled willingness to meet, demanding talks be based on fact and withdrawal of hard line statements. The operators’ chair echoed an unchanged stance, saying negotiations cannot proceed with current demands.

Two District Republican Clubs Endorse Behrens for renomination

The Tenth and Twelfth District Republican clubs unanimously endorsed Mayor Behrens for renomination and reelection, joining earlier support from the Twelfth Hebrew Republican club as well as several others. A Twelfth district resolution praised Behrens' administration for economy and efficiency and urged citizens to resist outside interference, backing his renomination and reelection. The meeting also endorsed Alderman Louis Abriola, elected to fill the vacancy after Arthur A Baker became Warren Harding High School superintendent.

Police Field Day Draws Huge Crowd on Bridgeport Island

The Bridgeport Police department held its first annual mardi gras and field day at Pleasure Beach to benefit the pension fund drawing an estimated 30 000 attendees. Highlights included a record baby show with about 600 entries won by William John Darcy and many other contests and prizes for mothers and children amid heavy car traffic and special event shuttles.

Building trades strike over high school job dispute

Union carpenters painters and plasterers stay out on the Congress High School project pending a conference between Milton McDonald and the Board of Education. They allege unfair competition from non union electricians and from Peel and company for plumbing work. McDonald says Peel acts as a journeyman though a master plumber, prompting union demands to maintain a workforce. The High School electrical contract is held by Kilpatrick and Hotz while Morris has been doing the electrical work.

Refuses Return Of Mrs Canaday In Texas

Austin August 26 AP Governor Miriam Ferguson denied Governor Al Smith's requisition for extradition of Mrs Roscoa Canaday of San Antonio. New York accuses her of kidnapping her child from her former husband. Ferguson says she believes the mother acted under circumstances any parent might. She doubts a New York or Texas jury would convict a good mother based on her husband’s testimony aimed at jail.

Weygold Held for Grand Jury After Disruption

Frederick Weygold, 55, Louisville artist, was bound over to the grand jury after interrupting Dr John Roach Straton during a Calvary Baptist Church talk on evolution. He was charged with interrupting public worship and released on $300 bond. Weygold said the meeting should allow discussion and compared the incident to the Scopes trial.

Married Again Contests Wife Divorce Plea

Rev Mr Dumbell, once an Episcopal rector in Darien, fights his wife Anna Sherrod Dumbell in Fairfield County Superior Court over a decree of divorce and alimony. Attorneys Carter and Cressy filed notice to represent him on jurisdictional grounds. Mrs Dumbell seeks financial maintenance and child custody for their eighteen year old son. The couple married April 8 1890 and she accuses intolerable cruelty.

Referee Attacks City Prosecutor Over Interference in Case

In federal bankruptcy court yesterday an extreme dispute arose over a motor truck linked to Samuel J. Klair of Blair Plate Glass. The truck, valued over $2,000, is held in the custody of receiver Paul Goldberg, while creditor John L. Carpenter seeks return of the vehicle amid Klair’s bankruptcy proceedings and disputed notes.

Crippled Veteran Called Faker Is Sent to Canada

Eugene Moussett a Windsor Ontario native and World War I veteran who says he was crippled in service was deported to Canada after an investigation. He claimed to have a 609 acre Alberta farm and to be traveling from New York on foot, singing for a living. Assistant Superintendent Morrissey ruled Moussett a faker.

Moonshiner Arrested Escapes Police Shots in Easton

William Nemeth formerly of Fairfield was arrested in Easton for illegal liquor production at the Beardsley homestead on Kline road. After a raid, Nemeth and a companion fled on a car as a state trooper clung to the vehicle. A pursuit by officers resulted in a crash and continued escape into nearby woods. Officers seized three stills, two gallons of cider brandy, and cider. Nemeth posted $500 bond to await Easton court. Burr remained at large.

Three Killed Eight Crown During Storm

Ottawa dispatch reports three deaths in New Brunswick and Quebec during a late day storm. Four youths sheltering under a tree were killed after it fell on them. Names Maximin Watour Joseph Gallant and James Richards are listed among the dead. Two others drowned when a boat capsized near Quebec City. Roosevelt friend to speak today at Liana Club meeting

Leo KH Miller traveler and writer from Stratford, once closely compared to Theodore Roosevelt on major expeditions, will speak at the Liana club noon session at Stratford hotel. Bankrupt Clothier Claims Title As World’s Champion Unlucky Man

Isadore Shapiro former owner of four menswear stores in Stamford explains his ruin to Referee John Keogh in bankruptcy court. He says three robberies gutted stock, intruder in skylight slashed clothes, and his wife ran off with a partner taking proceeds and $1,800 in bank funds. Debts total $16,984.67 and assets $5,418.37.
