Kolehmainen wins the marathon to set a new record while an American finishes seventh as Wee Organ of Pittsburgh becomes the first U S representative to complete the grueling race. Relay races for U S 00 metre men break Olympic mark with a Boston man leading in the 3000 metre event.
Duka Kahanamoku of the American swimming team in Antwerp won the 10 meters freestyle heat in 1 minute 1 4-5 seconds, breaking his own Olympic record by three fifths of a second. Kealens of Honolulu, Norman Ross, and W. W. Harris Jr also won heats and qualified. The record was set in Stockholm in 1922 amid extremely cold, rainy weather.
Hanzes Kolehmainen of Finland set a new Olympic marathon record at 2 hours 32 minutes 84 seconds, finishing through mud and rain to beat the old mark by over four minutes. He was closely pursued by Charles Itsham, the South African, in a tense shoulder to shoulder duel.
Yesterday a daughter was born to Mrs Estes Frankel of Colorado Avenue on the way to St Vincent’s hospital. Dr Joseph H Howard an Emergency hospital physician attended the birth. Mother and daughter were doing well last night.
Official telegrams report a violent weekend across Ireland with 700 believed killed to date. In Dundalk an armed ambush killed Sergeant Brennan and wounded Constables Sebett and Witherden. Sergeant Maunsol was shot dead near Masons, County Cork, as police patrols faced attacks. Continued details promised on page two.
Governor Harding rejected Senator Coxs claim of a 15 million dollar Republican campaign fund calling it absolutely ridiculous. He cited rising costs from enfranchisement and warned the Democratic challenge to reveal exhaustive donations would not intimidate the party. He said pre Chicago funds were extended by convention and the treasury funded campaign needs ahead.
Rome authorities confirm Archbishop Mannix of Australia will visit the Irish College in Rome during his October trip. Monsignor John Haren, rector, may accompany him to formally welcome the archbishop. Local Irish institutions and clergy plan a large demonstration of support.
Senator Pat Harrison of Mississippi told Bridgeport Democrats at a ratification dinner that Harding was the pawn of money interests and that Republican managers spread unsafe propaganda to aid their war effort. In Repwood Catts Aux the plane crashed during a demonstration by a British artist company representative. The victims are Clit Vrodzer, it2 Bristol Engpdot, Joan C and Gus dumieson, all connected to the army aviation school. The accident happened when the aircraft plunged to ground from a height of about 600 feet.
In Walnut Cove North Carolina Aug 1 a clash at a carnival hall led to a fatal shooting after a Black man, unnamed, allegedly asked to dance with white girls. Two men died and a third was wounded as deputies pursued three escapees with mental health issues. Observers say the dispute centered on a request to dance with white girls.
Still searching for 29 missing after the sinking of the steamer Superior City in Lake Superior near Whitefish Point. Rescue teams report no new word as they scour the area for bodies from the crew of 30, including the second engineer, amid uncertain salvage prospects.
Paris reports Sir Reginald Tower the League high commissioner at Danzig requests Allied nations supply 20000 troops before unloading munitions intended for Poland. France says 6000 more troops may be needed max. gunboat arrives to arrange unloading at the port. Council neutrality stance noted. Versailles treaty rights cited.
At Camden X Aug 22 a Pennsylvania railroad electric train struck an automobile bus with 15 occupants. Eight killed and four injured. The driver apparently started across the tracks after signaling by a flagman. The bus was struck on its side. An 18 year old girl and two babies died after the impact. Injured were taken to a hospital with expected recoveries.
Aug 22 Mexico deploys three expeditionary columns in Jalisco to crush the rebellion in Tulgen led by Pedro Aumora and to release American and British captives kidnapped days ago. Columns mix cavalry and infantry and are commanded by officers familiar with the region.
Allied observers in Warsaw report that Polish forces have achieved a likely victory in their current offensive. They note rapid Polish advances in multiple sectors north and northeast of Warsaw, with Red Army units retreating and resistance varying by area. Observers warn the Red forces may withdraw toward the Thorn sector or attempt last stands before possible surrender if supplies and movement allow.
Washington reports state that US ships are loading arms and munitions bound for Poland from American ports. Washington Aug 22 Rail road workers who joined recent outlaw strikes are cut off from about 200 million dollars in union assets. W N Doak vice president of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen said the yardmen's association led by John Gruunay of Chicago is pursuing in federal court to recover its share of a 70 million dollar fund for trainmen. Doak said the outlaw group has little chance of recovery due to court rulings on similar cases. He added they will not enter court with clean hands.

Warsaw dispatches say Polish aviators maintain front communication with bases as reinforcements of men, ammunition, and guns arrive. Some experts view the Warsaw withdrawal as a strategic ruse to draw Poles out of their strong defenses into open country for a potential capital breakthrough.
BERNE August 2 The premiers of Italy and other nations meet to exchange views on issues including Russia and Poland. No formal decisions are expected. talks aim to acquaint leaders with each other’s positions. The Australian premier will attend for part of the discussions.
Paris reports say US cruiser Pittsburgh and two French battleships move to back League of Nations enforce treaty provisions aiding Poland.
