Strange Phials Wash Ashore Off Jersey Long Island
New York August 17. For two weeks thousands of mysterious phials washed up along Jersey and Long Island shores. They contained a white powder and were hermetically sealed. Children found them and beachgoers examined them. Chemists identified them as calcium hypochlorite used to purify water, packed in vacuum cases for overseas soldiers.
