Navy Dept announces no fatalities from new offensive weapon used by a U boat in a North Carolina coast raid. Coast Guards crew at station and lighthouse overcome six men. Three large oil areas generate pungent gas, covering more than an acre.
Gas exposure at the Cane River mouth near Smith Island harms several, including the keeper and his wife, along with coast guard and life-saving crew. A brood of geese on the reservation died and other animals showed signs of the gas. No serious injuries reported among victims.
Washington reports a German submarine released a poisonous gas plume near Smith Island off the North Carolina coast on Saturday. Six men were overcome by the gas as a large oil-slick and gas cloud spread over the water. The Navy described the incident as brief, noting mustard-like fumes and limited casualties.
