Warn Automobile Makers Enter War Work Now
Washington Aug 9 Manufacturers of passenger automobiles were urged by the War Industries Board to convert to 100 percent war work before January 1 1919. In a letter to the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce the board rejected a voluntary 60 percent curtailment and warned that steel and materials for war work are scarce. No passenger car production will be allowed until sworn inventories of materials on hand are filed.

Lightning Strikes Barn on Madison Road in Milford
A lightning bolt struck the rear barn of Dr. Andrew McQueeney on Madison Road off Vincellette Street shortly after 1 PM, destroying the barn and causing about five thousand dollars in losses. Firemen struggled to receive the alarm due to storm damaged telephone lines. Nine words?

Suicide at railroad station ends life of Joseph Vigue
Joseph Vigue about 28 years old hanged himself with a belt in a lavatory at the railroad station. His body was found by A P Davis, life pronounced by Alexander MacPherson, and removed to Cullinan Mullins Buckley. Vigne, a Locomobile Co employee, lived at 68 Washington Avenue. Police and hospital were notified. the belt hooked to a coat hook five feet from the floor. The dead man’s belongings included books and papers. residence listed as Stamford. Continued on Page Two.

Park Life Savers Rescue Man Stricken at Seaside Park
At Seaside park last night a bather was stricken by an epileptic fit while swimming. Captain M A Baur and United States Volunteer Life Saving corps members revived him on the beach near the bathhouse. About 4 000 bathers were at Seaside yesterday with a record of over 5 000 on Wednesday. Anna Baum, daughter of Captain Baum, will participate in a 60 yard swim Sunday afternoon after recent training at Seaside.

American Vessel Sunk off Hatteras By U Boat Raider
The schooner Stanley L. Seaman bound from Newport News to a foreign port was sunk 110 miles east of Cape Hatteras by a German submarine U 132. Captain McAloney and eight crew survived, picked up by a British vessel after firing on the ship without warning. The U-boat looted the Seaman before sinking her with a bomb. the crew spent three days in the Gulf Stream before rescue.
