A daytime riot in northwest Miami near Biscayne Bay left a sniper and a passerby dead. About seven others injured, with 50 arrested for curfew violations and disorderly conduct. National Guard deployed as streets were sealed to whites and a 4 p.m. curfew imposed.
National Guard troops ended a night of burning and looting in Liberty City where two people died. Hours later a fresh outbreak of looting and shooting erupted near Central Negro District. Three were shot near midnight, one fatally, as a curfew extended to cover Sloventown and surrounding areas. Police reinforced patrols as gangs moved along Third Avenue toward downtown.
South Vietnamese infantry and U S air support pounded Gio Linh near the South China Sea with howitzers and mortars. The government said 107 enemy soldiers were killed while seven allied troops died. The clash marked the area’s heaviest ground action in weeks as Viet Cong forces reportedly prepare a major offensive.
Senator Ribicoff spoke at a $100-a-plate dinner in Westport pledging to oppose the Cockenoe island nuclear plant. He said he would seek federal agency action if needed and supported public retention of local lands as Westport applies for a $67,500 grant to purchase the island.
New York AP reports multimillionaire Lewis E. Wolfson was found guilty on federal charges linked to a stock deal. Three associates were also found guilty. Wolfson faces up to 74 years extra in prison and a $42,000 fine. He appeals a prior sentence of one year and $100,000.

Marine Pvt Anibal Falcon 23 of Hanover Street was killed in Vietnam from a head wound. Born in Puerto Rico he came to the city at age five and attended Roosevelt School. The notice confirms his death and family notification, with ongoing details about his service.
The Pentagon announced the United States will begin testing multiple warheads on land and sea based missiles this month at Cape Kennedy. The MIRV program involves Minuteman III and Poseidon missiles with as many as three or ten warheads respectively, to be tested over two years amid ongoing arms talks with the Soviet Union.
About 1606 gallons of toxic nitric acid leaked from a Monsanto Co tanker being pumped at Axton Cross Co on Canal Street. The spill damaged Axton Cross, B F Goodrich, and Samarins Electronic Corp with minor water damage to Goodsich and Samarins. one firefighter, Fred Durreschimid, suffered minor burns and was treated at Griffin Hospital.
Gov. Spiro T. Agnew of Maryland accepts the Republican vice presidential nomination in Miami Beach. He vows a strong fight to unite the party as a Michigan challenge to Nixon’s selection is rejected by delegates. Agnew appears confident despite saying he lacked time to prepare a detailed message.
Willard C Olson wins $250 for the Sunday Post crossword with puzzle number 741. Olson of 534 Henry Ave Steatford works for Nelson and Fekert in Bridgeport plans a vacation next week and may use the prize money then. His wife Jessie doubts the win but leaves the decision to him.
Nixon accepted his second Republican presidential nomination before about 18 000 in Miami Beach. He spoke of “the long, dark night for America is about to end” and pledged to win in November while praising Eisenhower and urging a return to the American dream.
A Young Marine pageant and public event will be held at Kennedy Stadium from 1 to 4 p.m. as part of the national Marine Corps League convention. A jet fighter flyover will salute the Young Marines, with 475 participants from across the state. Claude Blackie Downing, national MCL commandant, will present a charter to Commander Lawrence Houle.
