A fire destroyed a second story bedroom at 3406 Wood Avenue owned by Jonathan Wilde, an insurance agent. Smoke and flames were noticed shortly after 9 p.m. by Morris Gross, who reported the blaze. Firemen contained the blaze to one room with $500 losses to the building and furniture. A four year old child, son of the Wildes, was home during the fire but not believed involved. Neighbors and bystanders gathered as Chief Beardsley directed operations and recalled the scene about an hour after alarm.

COPENHAGEN Aug 2 Admiral Von Holtzendorff head of the German admiralty staff has been retired for health reasons. Admiral Reinhardt Scheer will succeed him. Von Holtzendorff, recalled to lead in 1926, explained in Cologne Gazette that U boats avoided American transports due to naval patrols and embarkation points. The aim was to curb enemy cargo space to limit Allied war capability.
