Rutherford Platt Hayes, son of former President Rutherford B Hayes, died in a Tampa hospital after a yearlong decline. He lived in Clearwater for seven years, previously in Umatilla and Asheville. Survived by widow and two sons. Colonel Webb Hayes, present at Fremont, Ohio home, is the only brother remaining.
Constantinople July 31. The governor issued an order demanding the 2,200 White Russians who have lived there for eight years leave Turkey by August 1. The move, said to follow a Turkish law, leaves the Russians two days to decide their fate. LoN talks with Angora may have extended their stay, but Angora did not inform the governor of any extension. The Russians are remnants of General Wrangel's defeated army.
In Terryville this morning Eugene Laskowski 40 of Bristol and Otto Killian fourteen Bristol were drowned at Old Manhsal a pond. They jumped to aid a lost fishing pole and Killian went in after Laskowski. Alfonso Pisarekti twelve also jumped in and pulled Killian ashore. Neighbors and the Terryville fire department with grappling irons searched the pond for five hours before recovering the bodies.
The RS-1 semi rigid Army dirigible completed a 36 hour airborne stay and landed at Scott Field Belleville Illinois at 1140 tonight after traveling from Lakehurst New Jersey. Unfavorable weather delayed landing en route. Officials near Detroit and Dayton report passing over Lima and Dayton with no further guidance.
Glenna Collett the twice women’s national golf champion will face court in Norwalk on a speeding charge before joining a foursome at Shore Haven Country Club. The match, paired with Seeley against Reith and Woodford, is set for 10:30 and none of the outcome is expected to influence the case, which the prosecuting attorney says will be disposed of before the match begins.
A $3000 reward is offered for the return of a string of pearls believed dropped on the Boston Post road between Westport and Darien. The pearls were linked to the jail sentence of James Monahan, alias Boston Billy Williams, who threw them away after a traffic stop. Police later searched the area but found nothing amid dense brush.
At 3 am in Daniel Maher's pool room on Main Street five masked gunmen raided an all night dice game, holding 50 men at gunpoint and stealing cash and jewelry presumed to exceed 300. No complaint was filed, but police investigated. suspects appeared under thirty and well dressed.
Three Oklahoma state penitentiary inmates died and two more were gravely ill after a wood alcohol drinking spree inside the prison. Victims were Robert Barnett and Joe Wilson, both serving years for robbery and narcotics or larceny. Otho Barnes and Eugene Wade were also seriously ill. The alcohol was reportedly stolen from the paint shop during Saturday. A wardens’ investigation follows.
George Wilson, sixteen, was caught by passerby Frank Tome as he burglarized Phillips Battery Service on State street. Tome saw movement, entered the rear door, grappled the youth, and held him until police arrived. Wilson had binoculars from the store. Burglary charge filed at Third precinct. bond set at $500 for City court arraignment.
Lieutenant C A Pearson died instantly while Lieutenant C W Luthey was seriously injured when their airplane of the 471st observation squadron and 532nd pursuit squadron crashed near Wichita. Both were Army aviators stationed at Fort Riley Kansas.
Nahant Mass July 31 A daring two mile swim from a disabled motor launch to a Coast Guard station saved sixteen people. George Robinson passenger, stripped to underclothes, swam to summon help as the helpless craft drifted rapidly seaward until located by the Coast Guard.

A sedan owned by Christian L Kost of 61 Pacific Street and a firefighter at Engine House No 6 burned in a garage behind his home shortly after 1 o clock. The car valued at 600, the garage badly damaged, and fire units from Engine House No 2 contained the flames with no estimate of total damage available.
WESTPORT July 31. Dives into water up to the waist at Compo Beach and suffers serious injuries. Edward Hitchcock thirty seven is hospitalized in Norwalk with suspected skull fracture and paralysis of the right side. Town health officer Dr Munson and Frank Dayton attended to him, unsure how the peril was ignored.
Police protected Rev Henri Vincent and Rev Joseph Baril when they attempted to answer critics at an open air meeting in Woonsocket. The meeting opposed Bishop William Hickey’s plan to levy funds from Franco American parishes for diocesan high schools. The crowd hissed and some youths threatened to stone the priests until officers intervened.

William V. Nowlan, longtime Fourth Ward election moderator in Danbury, died at his home on Austin Street. Age mid-fifties, death due to heart complications. Survived by four children Frederik Nowlan state highway supervisor Agnes Nowlan John Keltey and O L Bassett. Funeral at St Peters Row church Tuesday morning with burial in St Peters Catholic Cemetery.
West Haven July 31 Five occupants of an automobile were injured when it crashed into a filling station at Campbell Avenue on the Milford Slew Haven turnpike. Driver Jose Zolnierwicz arrested on reckless driving. Station keeper Maurice Fitzgerald fractured leg. Mrs Helen Zolnierwicz and Mrs Wanda Krol suffer scalp injuries. Five occupants of a second car treated for minor injuries. Authorities cite speed and hill curvature as contributing factors.
Constantinople July 11. Kemal Pasha uses new authority to name each candidate for deputy, effectively placing himself as dictator of elections. He resumes active control after a long absence from Angora, with supporters arguing one man rule is needed to guide Turkey for years.
