The proposed 289 572 town budget for the new fiscal year to start July 1, released by Daniel F. Wheeler, would raise the tax rate from 17 to 19 mills, costing about 6 573 more than this year. The May 12 town meeting could cut items but not add funds. Major item is 162 938 for the Board of Education, with buses, tuition, new rooms and staff expanding general town and safety budgets. Public health and police funds rise, and an emergency generator for the Volunteer Fire department is urged.
Jackson, April 29 AP Four more prison guards quit their jobs as Dr Vernon Fox vows to fight for his post at the Southern Michigan state prison amid the riot aftermath. Six guards have resigned, one convict died, and about twenty inmates and guards were injured. Fox, a prison psychologist, was relieved after praising mutineers and says he will pursue a teaching post instead.
New Haven authorities will screen about 270 inmates and 25 personnel at the county jail for tuberculosis next Tuesday. Dr Clement F Battelli, newly appointed director of the City Health department, will direct the x ray program.
