Criticism on Limitation of Jury Service in Chinese Murder Trial

In Hartford on April 28, the selection of three jurors brought the total to five as critics targeted a statute allowing 27 jurors to be disqualified for prior service within five years. A bill to repeal the five year limit was introduced after a Judiciary committee report. Of eighty five examined, 22 were disqualified for prior Superior court jury service, with juror costs rising to about five to five fifty dollars per person. The two accepted jurors from Habit Granby and one from Glastonbury had recent jury service. The case has seen more jurors examined than in the Gerald Chapman trial, with hundreds called and dozens eliminated by challenges. State and defense use remaining challenges. Attorney Hugh M. Alcorn shifts focus to jurors’ views on accessories versus principals in the case. The accused are Sto Hoo Wing and Chin Gung, charged in Manchester on March 24.
