Muscle Shoals name change noted to Musella Shoals
Alan Florence reports that from 1818 to 1876 the Tennessee River settlement near Muscle Shoals was called Musse Shoals or Musella Shoals. John Weakley presents maps and historic data noting Cypress Land Company purchase in 1851 and a later influx of settlers. The rapids were named for the edible mussels found in the stream.
