Washington April 23 conferees voted to drop the five-cent rate for intercity letters from a postal rate hike bill and set the rate at four cents. Five Army Parachutists Die in Eagle Wing Drop at Fort Campbell
At Fort Campbell Kentucky five paratroopers were killed and more than 100 wounded during a mass air drop as part of Exercise Eagle Wing. Gusty winds blew jumpers off the intended landing zones and into trees rocks and woodland. Up to 1,300 members of the 101st Airborne Division took part as the military said the maneuvers would continue with another mass jump planned for Saturday. SFC Jennings Price of Clinton Tennessee noted his 80th jump.

Bethel Teen Convicted in Auto Fatality
A Bethel teenager, Michael Burns 17, was convicted in Superior Court of manslaughter for the Sept 13 auto death of Edward G. Flynn 44 on Old Hawleyville road. Co defendant Thomas Scales 18 was acquitted after a two hour trial. Based on testimony Dr John D Booth linked Flynn’s death to skull fractures and brain injuries from the crash. State's Attorney Lorin W Willis said the youths were racing on the narrow curve where Burns collided with Flynn's sedan.

Car Crash Claims Weston Man Ernest Moon
Ernest Moon 46 of Lyons Plains Road Weston died when his car ran up an embankment on North Avenue near the Merritt Parkway and overturned, pinning him beneath. A wrecker freed the vehicle, Dr William McMahon of Norwalk pronounced death at the scene. Moon, route salesman for Ferris Dairy in Westport, had lived previously in Penguin apartments on Hillspoint Road and came from Richmond Virginia. He is survived by his wife Juanita and two daughters Pamela age three and Virginia seven months. Services are being arranged by Charles H. Lewis Funeral Home.
