The Senate voted 51 to 35 to turn down the Ribicoff amendment mandating black children be integrated into suburban schools across metropolitan areas. The defeat opens the path for the broader desegregation bill backed by Sen. Ribicoff while facing strategic opposition from Southerners and other factions.
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird told editors the Soviet Union has launched a new and extensive intercontinental ballistic missile effort since February. He warned it could require offsetting U.S. actions and cited momentum in strategic defenses as an indicator of months of planning.
A series of brush fires sparked by a passing train halted train traffic east of Sauga tuck station around 7 30 p m. Fire climbed several acres between tracks and Mill Pond near Sherwood Island State Park. fires largely died as water reached them. Firefighters laid hoses across the tracks near the railroad bridge.
Richard K. Savery, 21, of 38 Hillside Avenue Darien, died from internal injuries after his car veered on the Connecticut turnpike east of the Darien line, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at Norwalk Hospital. Trooper R K Smith said he was traveling west when the auto hit a center guard rail. Cpl. Vincent Brennan led the investigation.

Kathryn M. Fenton, a Bridgeport teenager from 1857 Fairfield Avenue, won the national Career Key award at the Girls Clubs of America convention in Tennessee. Representing the North End Girls club, she earned a $750 scholarship to a college of her choice amid competition from 194 clubs. Laurelton Hall senior Kathryn previously won the regional Career Key prize in Milford.
