Waterbury Native Elected President of U S Chamber

Waterbury native H Ladd Plumley was elected president of the U S Chamber of Commerce. He urged rallying of business labor and government to restore confidence after last week's steel price pressures and urged support for Kennedy's administration while watching its actions. Plumley, 61, is an insurance executive and chairman of the chamber.

State Mutual Life names new president as Chamber meets

The State Mutual Life Assurance Company of America in Worcester Massachusetts elected a new president for a one year term starting May 2. He is a Waterbury Connecticut native with a long career at the firm, succeeding Richard Wagner who becomes chairman of the chamber board. The chamber’s 50th annual meeting is set for April 20 with the president to address the gathering.

Frost Donates Manuscript as Dartmouth Opens Frost Room

Poet Robert Frost presented Dartmouth College with the manuscript and related materials from his book In the Clearing during the dedication of the Robert Frost room in Baker Library. The ceremony marked Frost's long ties to the college since his freshman year decades ago.

Alaska frees three Japanese fishing captains in Kodiak

In Kodiak Alaska three Japanese skippers were released on bond after agreeing to leave Shelikof Strait within five days. Superior Court Judge James Fitzgerald set bail at 2500 for Mongo Hinesaki and 300 for Tadao Higashima and Satoshi Ming. A trial in Anchorage is pending. Boats and crews were held in Kodiak harbor until release.

US Sales to Japan Jumped Over 30 Percent in 1981

US estimates show sales to Japan in 1981 reached about 1.7 billion dollars, more than 30 percent higher than 1980 figures. The rise reflects stronger trade and economic factors influencing the bilateral market.

U S Drops Its Claim on Hero Reenlistment Bonus

Former Army Sgt Alfred Emanuel Smith, decorated Korean War veteran, will not repay $405.14 from a $55 weekly check after the government dropped its civil claim. Assistant U.S. Attorney Macdougal Rice cited a 1959 comptroller general ruling. Smith, a Falls Church, Virginia resident and former tanker, earned Silver and Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart in Korea before reenlisting in 1954 and later being honorably discharged. The Army had demanded repayment after discovering an outstanding reenlistment bonus.
