The Senate backed retirement at age 60 as riders in conference with the House. Long, author of the campaign financing plan, refused to comment though he sees no hurry in Senate action on the pending bill. The Senate began its third week of debate on the tax legislation after rejecting an attempt to cut the auto excise tax from 7 to 4 percent.
Tax deadline chaos as thousands swarm the post office to beat the date. The IRS says the day was the busiest in years with extra staff and late filers facing surcharges up to 25 percent after five months. Delays may push refunds 9 to 11 weeks. residents urged to arrange mail delivery to prevent theft.
David I. Miller the first draft card burner in the nation was freed on bond pending a U S Supreme Court appeal. Miller, 24, had been sentenced to 2 4 4 years for burning his draft card in 1965 to protest the Vietnam War. He was held at the Federal House of Detention.
In Beenham England the bodies of two girls aged 8 and 10 were found in a six foot gravel pit Monday night by a workman. Scotland Yard used arc lamps to scour the area while extra police cordoned off the scene. The victims were not immediately identified and a murder investigation was opened.
Andrew M. Heath Jr. was released from Norwalk hospital after a Jan 21 automobile crash on the Connecticut turnpike. His wife Liza Chapman Heath, a television and stage actress, was killed, and Heath heads the music department at Fairfield University residing at 34 Easton Road Westport.

Hartford AP report says Richard E. Turcelle Sr. was sentenced to two to seven years for manslaughter in the fatal shooting of his wife Marie in Coventry last Sept. 22. The 29 year old father of four cried as he was led away after the judge refused a suspended sentence and set parole eligibility at about 38 months.
