The Viet Cong battalion staged raids on Long Khaoh and Long Toan in the Mekong River Delta. Government reports say four soldiers were killed and one wounded as Viet Cong fighters blew up watch towers but failed to overrun the villages.
Mrs Corinne Boyd Riley a 56 year old widow of Congressman John Riley was elected unopposed as the Democratic candidate in a special election to fill the short term from South Carolina's second district. She plans to swear in soon and serve until January not pursuing a full term.
The Kellems firm relocated its plant to Stonington after restrictions. Miss Kellems’s brother David, Yale Sheffield School graduate and vice president, designed the new plant. She entered politics in 1942 opposing Clare Ronnhe Luce for Congress, later running for U S Senate and governor as an independent. The company mainly makes cable grips for industrial and commercial use.
In a low production year, US Steel raises prices prompting Jones & Laughlin to withhold comment while Bethlehem spokesmen report no immediate statement. Republic Steel in Cleveland says a price increase is likely and will be reviewed, citing higher costs and capital investments.

Only 10 of the extra 25 would be needed immediately for equitable representation in growing suburbs, while the rest funds future growth. The plan alters entitlement calculations, with Woonsocket and Central Falls losing five seats each, eight cities gaining 74 seats led by Warwick and Cranston, and preserves at least one seat per city or town. The amendment would require reapportionment within three years after the decennial census.
Worthington warns US Steel profits sank to 1952 lows in three-year period 1958 59 as reinvested profits fell from 115 million in 1959 to under 3 million last year while dividends stayed at 3 a share for five years. Allied Stores Corp plans a five year expansion to raise annual volume to 1 billion by 1963. The New York company aims to spend about 365 million as president and CEO Theodora Schlesinger discussed with analysts. Sales for the year ended June 1982 were over 1.2 billion. earnings were not reported.
Fairfield residents approve creating a Historic District committee after a public hearing led by the RTM Planning and Zoning panel. The plan would set strict rules and broad controls over exterior changes, with a study group to draft recommendations for the RTM and a possible commission to oversee districts such as Greenfield Hill and Southport.

Hartford April 1 two state prison inmates Andrew J Leighton Jr 25 of Hartford and Frank Springer were each given one year suspended terms for smuggling letters out of the Connecticut State Prison at Wethersfield. The sentences followed admissions of conveying letters and narcotics via inmates and a wider probe that implicated guards and other individuals.

Projects slated for 22 states with many updates in Washington DC Post office courthouse in Hartford Connecticut earmarked 1 833 007. Senate committee action pending. Congress must fund projects before construction.
Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co and Nationwide Mutual Fire Insurance Co announce the acquisition of majority interests in a group of Texas companies led by Commercial Standard Insurance Co. They will own 50 percent of outstanding stock with plans to raise to 60 percent and a price around 8 million dollars. All four firms operate under common management with headquarters in Fort Worth.
