About 1,500 people joined a 90 minute vigil in downtown Pittsfield Massachusetts to honor slain Dr Martin Luther King Jr Stores were closed during the demonstration which ended at 1230 p m at South Congregational Church
Mrs. Coretta King and three of Martin Luther King Jr's children led about 6 000 to 12 500 marchers through Memphis in a somber celebration of the slain leader. Civil rights leaders and union officials joined in front lines as Mrs King urged that his spirit live on and the fight for equality continue.
A drizzle dampened the scene as marchers carried a sign for Rev. King. Authorities banned umbrellas and weapon-like props while National Guard helicopters hovered and police sealed routes. King faced an injunction and his lawyers argued for a permitted march as a sniper struck during the day.
Sonia G Kowalkowski 30 of Trumbull pleaded guilty before Judge John Alexander to speeding 80 mph on the Connecticut turnpike March 5. She was arrested near the Westway exit in Fairfield after a radar check. John Ashworth 41 of Meriden was fined 30 after pleading guilty to the same charge, clocked at 80 mph in Fairfield March 16.
