Urgent plea calls on Bridgeport residents to donate to a city wide Community Chest. Total pledged reaches $190,338.46 as workers expect to reach $475,000 by Saturday with public support urged to boost contributions.
Norman Leeds states that designated gifts to the Community Chest will be used as donors direct. Bridgeport’s Community Chest nears its $475,000 goal with $150,338 raised. only 2,700 of 43,000 residents have contributed, averaging about $70 per subscription across twenty two causes.

Hartford dispatch reports fraternal and religious societies oppose Measure 10, seeking to tax memberships. one ally, Blodget, backs a revenue plan while Bridgett supports exemption. The bill would strip tax exemptions for fraternal and religious groups funded by dues, with repeal of conflicting acts.
In London April 1 Associated Press reports the British prime minister signaled progress in the coal strike crisis. He said the government is willing to participate in discussions to move toward a conference with coal owners and miners to examine pumping and related wage issues while other matters await resolution. Leaders in the House of Commons welcomed a possible easing as negotiations continued.
Judge Hinman in the Superior Court dismissed the divorce complaint of James J. Wissthes of Middle town on the grounds that mental disability alleged did not prove sufficient cause. The case cites alleged insanity and impotence as factors. the judge ruled the allegations failed to establish grounds for divorce under Connecticut law.

Of 1708 Bridgeport marriages last year 51 percent of brides wed before 25 while 34 percent of grooms did. About 80 percent of brides married by age 25 versus 67 percent of grooms. The peak for brides was 25 to 38, with most marriages between 26 and 24.
A driver hurt in a collision on North Avenue was later held on a drunken driving charge. He suffered a possible skull fracture and scalp laceration after wrecking into a pole near Clinton Avenue. Police reported the car lacked license and was observed at a local garage.
Anxious Hodiy Nesatar, 34, of 170 Walnut Street, attempting suicide for a second time in a week, inhaled gas at a hospital yesterday. He was moved to Hillside home by Dr J F Walch and placed under watch to prevent further self harm, accompanying Mickalunas, two children.
Movinignon Ga April 7 Evidence was presented and closing remarks begun in the trial over the death of Lind sey Peterson and ten other rural farmhands held on the Williams plantation. John William Sper county phantalian owner testified his absolute innocence while Manning, a Nepro farm boss, is described as connected to the motive. The case is expected to reach a verdict tomorrow.
Rey Harris ex Bridgeport resident now in Buffalo police custody faces a confession with many conflicts to the actual facts. Physicians say his mental state is normal. District Attorney Desaling remains skeptical. Widow Elwell says she never heard of Mrs Fairchild who supposedly hired the pair. Whitman seeks more time to evaluate Harris. Housekeeper Marie Larsen also denies knowledge of Mrs Erenild.
Harris formerly of Bridgeport and nephew of Mr and Mrs L A Cowen confessed to Buffalo police that he and a man named Duncan were hired by a mysterious woman to kill Elwell or Joseph B New York whist expert and cropman Jane remained unshaken in his story through day long examinations. He described rooms in Elwell's home and said Duncan fired the shot. Harris, son of the late Sam Harris, lived with aunt and uncle on Park Avenue after parents died and was said to have been arrested in 1323.
