Westport Sermon Highlights Radical Pastor Leaving
Rev. Vinton W. Mitchell delivers a valedictory sermon at Westport Methodist Church amid plans for him to head a boys' school in Norwalk. The pastor faces dismissal after one year, deemed too radical by the church Official Board, as he argues for choosing the cross and roots of truth over pleasantries. The piece ties his rhetoric to Van Wyck Brooks and a broader call for a newer, nobler church.
