Woman May Be Named Federal Court Judge

Washington April 16 believed in administration quit tars to be a good chance that President Coolidge will appoint the first woman on the Federal bench in filling the vacancy caused by the resignation of Judge Benjamin Bledsoe of the Southern District of California. This was revealed when it was learned that Senator Hiram Johnson of California had given the strongest possible endorsement to Mrs Mabel Walker Willebrandt as attorney general for the past four years as his only selection for the post. Johnsons recommendation placed Mrs Willebrandt in the strongest position of any woman ever considered for a federal judgeship. It signals the Johnson organization influence in California and support from the other wing led by Senator Shortridge who endorsed her as one among nine aspirants. The President previously declined to name her for the Northern district due to residence, now she hails from Los Angeles. The White House denied reports that no time had come for women on the bench. Recommendations are with the attorney general, and a recess appointment may be announced soon. The commission must be submitted for Senate confirmation in December.
