The Republican State Central committee in Waterbury endorsed U. S. Senator Raymond E. Baldwin for the Presidency praising his record as three term Connecticut governor and current senator. The event also celebrated Waterbury’s first Republican mayoralty win in 26 years with Mayor elect Raymond E. Snyder in attendance.

Injured cops to return today from Brattleboro

Four Bridgeporters including three police officers were to return by car today from Brattleboro Vermont after a five day hunting trip marred by a police car crash in Brattleboro. Detective Murphy and Mr Carbone expected to be released from Brattleboro hospital. Sgt Conte and Patrolman Witt also returning. Conte’s exposure illness is improving.

Piccolo Quizzed In Fund Probe In New Haven

Ralph A. Piccolo chief of Bridgeport Internal Revenue Office was among more than 40 department employees questioned by a federal grand jury probing possible Federal Corrupt Practices Act violations in the 1946 campaign. Piccolo met with the jury and U S Attorney Adrian W Maher for over 30 minutes and left without comment. Also present was Thomas Wall New Haven bureau chief who appeared in the grand jury room at least twice. It was unclear if he testified. Continued on Page Four.

Hospitals Plan Training School for Attendants

Bridgeport and St. Vincent's hospitals plan a joint training school for prospective hospital attendants. A one year course starts around Jan 1, 1948, with theory in St. Vincent's and clinical work split between both hospitals. Students receive room and board and $25 monthly, with textbooks supplied by the Department of Education. The plan was approved by Bridgeport Hospital's board and announced by James M. Dunlop.

Britain refused to share mandate responsibility with a United Nations commission rejecting a plan for a nine nation partition and a transitional U N rule period. Milford Fireman Dies After Brush Fire Accident

Milton W. Powers a 38 year old Milford firefighter died in Bridgeport Hospital after a fall from a moving auto while responding to a brush fire alarm Oct 23. He never regained consciousness after head injuries. Powers survived by his wife and two daughters.

Fire sweeps Revere Beach area, $100000 loss

A November fire at Revere Beach Amusement area damaged a cafe, a merry go round concession, and two bath houses, all closed for winter, with losses pegged at $100,000. Several year round businesses evacuated as fire crews from seven communities battled flames along Revere Beach Boulevard and Ocean Avenue, preventing spread to nearby wooden structures. No injuries occurred.

Rent Controls Extension Act Declared Unconstitutional

Federal Judge Paul Jones ruled the 1947 Rent Controls Extension Act unconstitutional declaring it a kiss of death for rent regulation. He said peace had returned in fact in 1946 and Congress lacked power to enforce peacetime rent limits. The decision dismisses Miller of Cleveland Heights case and lifts a prior injunction on rent increases.

Three Women Injured in Capitol Wood Crash

A two car collision at Capitol and Wood avenues near 7:15 last night left three women injured two seriously. Alice Eckstrand 36 of Red Stepney suffered spine and pelvis injuries. Anna Gold 50 of Briarcroft Long Hill had head and knee injuries with multiple cuts. Ethel Sager 44 of Daniels Farms Trumbull treated for knee and leg cuts and released.

Milford police charge trio in extortion plot against Bridgeport restaurant owner

Milford detectives arrested Paul Agresta and Joseph Greco on idle charges while pursuing a broader blackmail case involving Mrs. Dominic Lombardo of Bridgeport. She alleges kidnapping last June 16 to pressure her into ceding her Blue Moon restaurant at 275 East Broadway Myrtle Beach to the suspects, who threatened further violence.
