Shorty Elwood Navy veteran and Bridgeport industrial league star

Walter Elwood known as Shorty served from 1900 to 1906, in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and aboard ships during the Spanish American War era. He settled in Bridgeport in 1905, led the Crane company crew for 27 years, and starred in the local Industrial League with Eaton Cole and Burnham, later Crane No. 2, winning the league title. He married Rose O Kane, and had six children including Walter Jr known as Bad, and daughters in nursing and wartime service.

Kingston Takes Measure of Bees in State Semi Pro Event

More than 200 marksmen are expected for the Mohegan Rod and Gun club sponsored trap tournament at Lordship Remington range. The event features 100 yard and 16 yard targets, doubles, and a 100 target test, with George T. Pistey as program chairman. Three local teams Rosehude Walnuts Lenox and Seymour Alumni won first round semi pro games in the National Baseball Congress tournament at Candlelite Stadium.

Karpinski Hurls One Hit Triumph

Gene Karpinski pitched a one hit shutout as Springwood defeated Newfields 3 to 0 in a Senior City league twilight game at Seaside Park. A key two-out double by Bredise in the sixth spoiled the no hitter bid. Johnny Soltis drove in the first two Springwood runs with clutch singles.

Three Senior City League Games At Seaside Park Today

Today three Senior City league games are listed at Seaside Park. The Black Rocks and Springwoods meet at 1015 on No 1 diamond with Rock captain Bill Scholz opposing Wallie Zukowski. At 330 the Lenox face the Rosebuds on No 1 with Matt Forman bidding for his eighth win. Twilight action on No 5 has the Walnuts against St John at 545 with Jim Mackie pitching for the Walnuts and Andy Soltis for the Saints. Next week three twilights follow beginning Monday.

Canadians Sweep International Lawn Bowling Match in Hartford

Canadian Provincial Lawn Bowling Association beat the American team 98 to 90 in Hartford. Each association fielded five rinks, Canadians won three of five matches, with Charles Dinnie of Springfield and Sid Dargie of Bridgeport earning top US skips as the Americans suffered their largest margin.

Kingston Colonials rally to crush Bridgeport 16–2 in league clash

Kingston Colonials slugged seven runs in the seventh inning to steamroll Bridgeport 16 to 2 before about 1200 fans in a Colonial League game. Cliff Bull started for Bres and Dan Rourke worked for Kingston, with three doubles fueling the rally. Bridgeport errors aided the onslaught as New York reliefs stabilized the late surge.

The Raybestos Cardinals defeated the Washington Kavakos in a two game playoff at Raybestos Memorial field. Frank Kuchta hurled a two hit win in the opener with John Buschbaum collecting two hits including a triple and two RBIs. The nightcap featured a Stratford tilt decided 1 to 0 as Beers and Kramer locked in a pitching duel.

Timers Beat Port Chester 9 to 1 In Colonial League Opener

Waterbury Timers defeated Port Chester 9 to 1 as Jou Rogin pitched 12 hits allowed three Clipper hurlers. The Waterbury offense broke open early scoring three in the first and six more across later frames. Barkus took the loss for Port Chester while Rosin and Tolda contributed offensively for Waterbury.
