A Gainesville Register correspondent recalls meeting President Johnson in Washington in the Fish Room after a waiting-room pass touched off tension with other reporters. The piece also notes a reader’s question about Easter dating, explaining Easter falls on the first Sunday after the full moon after March 21, with this year on March 29.
Bridgeport mayor George Harwood authorizes the Index to announce his candidacy for re election. He vows to continue serving the citizens of Bridgeport as mayor if re elected.
Mrs W E Ross finished a 30 hour Real Estate course on law financing and related topics at the Adolphus Hotel Dallas this week. Sponsored by the Texas Real Estate Association with many brokers and realtors in attendance. A second session is planned in San Antonio in mid summer. Mrs Fain Little visits with relatives this week.
Bridgeport voters see a swift shift as the council cuts mayor and judge salaries to nominal pay, creates J Boulware as city superintendent, and moves powers to him while abolishing Street Superintendent. Council salaries rise per meeting rules and election timing is noted.
The Chamber of Commerce launches a park fund drive to buy equipment and develop a city park. Early contributors appear in this edition with a weekly total to date to be published. Donations accepted at the Index office or mailed to Box 1104 Bridgeport care of the Chamber.
Wise County resident W B Gilley posts his candidacy detailing five years in law enforcement including two years as deputy and prior service with Bridgeport Police and as a constable. He asks for support, influence and votes to serve with equality and dedication.
Bridgeport School voters will April 4 elect five candidates for three trustee seats led by J O Edwards noting the five nominees E F Frnka L A Walker H A Mitchell Jimmy Loyd Carpenter and Sam Potts while County School Board seeks re election for J E Smith Precinct 2 and J P Mann Precinct 3 weekend visitors included Mr and Mrs Wilton Alsup of Abilene Mrs Irene Wood and Mr and Mrs Bobby Cantrell.
The Bridgeport High School Stage Band directed by Kenneth Harris will perform at 7 30 p m Thursday March 12 in the High School Auditorium with guest trumpet soloist Dr Ted Craeger from Denton and a jam session with Harris and students. Tickets are 35 cents for adults and 25 cents for students.
Polio vaccines Type III serum scheduled for March 15 from 1 to 5 PM. Type II serum offered at Bridgeport High School Gymnasium and Decatur Junior High School. The notice emphasizes protection from the disease.
