Former Wise County Sheriff Leroy Burch Dies at 6 June

Leroy Burch, Wise County sheriff from 1986 to 1992, died Thursday June 8 in Fort Worth amid health complications. Visitation was Sunday at Christian Hawkins Funeral Chapel, with funeral Monday at Aurora Baptist Church and burial at Aurora Cemetery. Pallbearers included David Box and Paul Deaton. honorary pallbearers were Doug Whitehead and Allen Reddin. Burch began in law enforcement as a jailer in 1982 and later served as patrol officer.

DA denies bribery charges in Rhome chief claim over gift

District Attorney Jana Jones rejects allegations by Rhome Police Chief K C Schoenthal that she accepted a gift from defendant Robert Leonard Stover who had been prosecuted. Schoenthal alleges Stover etched a Wise County seal and a plaque for Governor Perry, presented during Jones's party switch. Jones calls the charges absolutely false.

Wise County Declares 90 Day Burn Ban With Fireworks Ban

Wise County Commissioners declare a state of disaster and impose a 90 day burn ban due to drought and adverse weather. Fireworks banned county-wide except for commercially operated shows which must notify Fire Marshal Paul Cunningham 48 hours in advance. Violations carry a Class C misdemeanor up to $500 fine.

Becky Simpson to Testify in Tarrant County Court

Bridgeport resident Rebecca Simpson appeared on the Tarrant County docket with 42 defendants. Jury selection occurred Monday and testimony was slated to begin Tuesday. Simpson was arrested in November 2004 for allegedly attempting to hire an undercover officer to kill a female victim identified as Shermaine Watts and her husband Danny Watts. The charge is solicitation of capital murder, a first degree felony.

Bridgeport City Council approves a guaranteed maximum price for the new Public Safety Facility setting a cap of 2 061 179 51 dollars. The GMP reflects changes from an initial estimate of 2 085 000 with reductions from outside utility work and other cost shifts. A sally port furnishing and construction was among add ons in the project.
