A farmer and narrator on a July Fourth visit to Sam Potts' farm find a calf with its lower jaw stuck inside a broken brown jar. They wrestle the animal, freeing the jaw after the jar bangs against the steel fence. The writer jokes that next time cattle should have a bottle or trough to avoid being stuck.
Bridgeport Riding Club calls for parade entries to be registered with Chamber of Commerce secretary Mrs. Helen Stevens promptly. She said any entry from a tricycle to a trailer should be named to complete the parade route list and welcomes all participants.
Wise County deputies search for Larry Clayton Thomas a 23 year old white male linked to forgery cases in Wise and other counties. Chief Deputy Ronnie Eaves says Thomas faces burglary charges in Tarrant County and jailbreak warrants from the FBI in California. Authorities urge tips to the Wise County Sheriff’s Department.
Wise County records three traffic fatalities during the July 4th period. A 51-year-old Smithfield man died near Newark after a rear collision involving a Caldwell pickup. Harold Ward of Chico died in a single vehicle crash near Wise County Park. A Boyd youth, Gary L. Yarbrough, 17, drowned after a crash into a creek while Jimmie Wolf, 18, was hospitalized in critical condition.
A reported prisoner snatching in Twin Falls Idaho may explain a wisdom county sheriff department news blackout. Dispatchers reported orders not to talk to the news media posted by Chief Deputy Ronnie Eaves. The Star-Telegram says Erwin Turpin was moved from Twin Falls to Decatur by Texas Rangers after a court order.
Bond set at 25 000 dollars for Rose Halfhill 21 and Alberta Briggs 39 charged with injuring a child under 14 after allegedly placing a six year old girl in a hot bath and beating her. Child hospitalized in Dallas improving. Briggs is aunt and Halfhill was staying with the family. The incident occurred on Bridgeport's west side around 3 PM. Both women remained in Wise County Jail.
Harold Maples, editorial cartoonist for the Fort Worth Star Telegram, will headline Wise County Art Association’s meeting. He is known for his cartoons and paintings, with the gathering slated for 7:30 p.m. July 12 at Bridgeport High School.
Bridgeport City Council approved a $100 per month raise for City Manager Maury Brown, boosting his salary to $14 400 annually after a 2 to 1 vote. Critics argued it should align with the 7 percent rise given to other city employees.
Suzi Hales, Bridgeport High School women’s basketball coach for two years, resigns to become women’s athletic director at McKinney High School. Her husband Randy Hales will coach in the same system. Hales leaves after 49 wins and one loss with two district titles and state meet appearances, citing desire to work where her husband is employed.
The Bridgeport Riding Club holds a three night rodeo Thursday through Saturday with events including bareback and saddle bronc riding calf roping bull riding steer wrestling and girls barrel racing. Entry fees range from 15 to 25 dollars with a calf scramble nightly for youngsters two and under. Box seats available. Wayne Bradley notes good prices for rodeo fans.
