Bridgeport reconvenes its centennial planning meeting Thursday January 25 at 7 30 p m in the high school library. Chamber president Howard Meyers notes weather delayed the session and invites community members and Rogers Company representatives to join officials in organizing the celebration.
The Bridgeport Junior Woman's Club sponsors the Wise County Little Miss and Tiny Miss Contest on March 2 and 3. Little Miss entrants ages 7 to 12 perform three talents and model. Tiny Miss entrants ages 3 to 6 require an escort and model. Entry deadline is February 19 with a 5 dollar fee. contact Linda Christian or Betty Shankle for details. The contest is no longer state affiliated.
Representative Bill Sullivant reports the 63rd legislature is moving quickly with Speaker Price Daniel Jr appointing committees including freshmen. Reform measures have been sent to committees, notably a bill limiting conference committee powers on appropriations to mirror House and Senate versions. Sullivant says the ethics bill could prevent Sharpstown style scandals and curb state spending.
State Fire Marshall James C. Evans says seven fires in Bridgeport and three in Paradise are under investigation for possible arson. A $250,000 reward is offered for information leading to arrest and conviction.
About 70 residents including parents businessmen students and teachers join in a work conference at Paradise High School to define student needs for post school success. The event aims to shape career education programs and measure their effectiveness. Paradise is part of a regional project with over 2,000 participants in the Dallas Fort Worth area led by Partners in Career Education.
The Bridgeport Mothers' March Against Birth Defects is planned for Monday January 22 with six clubs participating. Volunteers meet at the Presbyterian Church at 6 p.m. to begin the house to house campaign under Mrs Judy Walker and Kathy Moore oversees the teenagers' drive. Last year Bridgeport workers collected $661.60.
Keller Telephone Company completed its two year, 750000 dollar improvement program with the completion of its permanent offices at 906 Stevens. The new building houses office and switch equipment and provides ultra modern switching enabling push button dialing and direct distance dialing for Bridgeport. All subscribers are now on one two or four party service as eight party service was eliminated within Keller's territory. John Lamkin, vice president, noted final touches will be added with new furniture arriving and invited the public to tour the new plant.
