Jaycees Meet School Faculty in Charity Basketball Game

The Bridgeport Jaycee All Stars face the School Faculty in a charity basketball game on Saturday January 15 at 7 30 p m in the high school gym. Proceeds go to the Fire Department for a new fire hall. Admissions are 1 dollar for adults and 50 cents for students. Donations accepted before during and after the game.

Citizens Sue Jones Charles Kowell and Postmaster Eddie Morrow obtained a discarded metal mailbox at no cost. Ed Hudson Lee Meier and the Natural Gas Pipeline Crew rebuilt it into a durable book drop, Riley Erwin repaired the lock, Albert Gonzales painted the library name.

Telephone Campaign To Raise Eight Thousand For New Fire Hall

Volunteers mobilize an intense telephone drive at City Hall to raise 8 000 for a new fire hall. Wives of firemen will operate the switchboard Friday evening and Saturday, led by Mrs. Billy R. Gilmore and Mrs. Darrell Walker. The Chamber of Commerce sent letters to rural residents seeking donations. Donors can call 683 2277 and a fire truck or police car will pick up contributions. 617.00 was added last week.

Texas School Financing Subject Ray Heads Advisory Conference

Bridgeport officials joined Texas school superintendents in Austin for the Texas School Administrators Advisory Conference after a federal ruling late in 1950s requiring Texas to reform local tax based school financing. Bridgeport Superintendent A E Greer cited that local funding covers about 50 percent of educational costs and that the district’s local share runs near 70 30 in contrast with state contributions. The meeting discussed restructuring ad valorem taxes and local revenue use to ensure equal educational opportunities across districts. Wilson Ray was elected president of the Bridgeport Industrial Foundation with officers Bob Goode Howard Meyers and Joanne Hodges.
