Voter Registration Open in Wise County Through January 31 1971

Voter registration is underway in Wise County through January 31 1971. Applications for voter certificates are available from the Decatur tax collector assessor’s office. Ballots require correct information including precinct numbers for Bridgeport Paradise Boonsville and Chico. In 1970 Wise County had 7817 registered voters. 18 year olds may register but vote only in local elections unless Texas grants broader rights.

The Salvation Army will have a truck in Bridgeport on Thursday January 21 1971 to collect repairable items no longer used by local families. Call Bridgeport Indes at 683-4021 to arrange a home pickup before January 21.

Fire destroys Boonsville home of Vernon Wingate

New Year's Day blaze caused by an open gas heater gutted the Wingates' house in Boonsville. Neighbors helped rebuild the kitchen and later constructed a bathroom as plans to buy and move a new house proceed. Community funds and a shower aid the Wingates as they restart after the fire.

Parents Students Meet To Discuss Dress Code

Parents and students from junior high and high schools met in the high school auditorium on Monday Jan 4 to discuss dress regulations. About half favored changes and half did not, with a committee of 35 appointed to study the matter. The committee will meet at the junior high library on Thursday Jan 4 at 7 00.

Newberry to Speak at Bridgeport Quarterback Club Banquet

Dr. W C Newberry will return as speaker for the second annual football banquet on January 16 1971 at the Elementary School Cafeteria. He teaches at Southwest Texas State University and has given over 300 speeches in 41 states. Joe Mosley will MC with special awards for junior high and varsity teams and the 1970 71 Football Sweetheart to be announced. Tickets are $2.50 from the Quarterback Club or Coach Troy Burch.

Welfare Makes Three Major Changes

Welfare department outlines three changes to begin January 4 1. A simplified eligibility form for Old Age Assistance and related programs and a client completed form for AFDC 2. Shift from long term needs to short range specific goals 3. Staffing changes to handle rising caseloads The new method uses a self filled form with built in fraud controls tests show under one percent ineligible readers noted it aligns with federal mandate due July 1 1971.

The Band Booster Club will meet Tuesday night January 12 at 7 30 p m in the Junior High Cafeteria. The Beginner Band will present a musical program and the public is invited to attend.
