Wise County judge bans fireworks and welding materials

County Judge Dick Chase ordered a seven day ban on all fireworks and combustible welding materials in Wise County to curb fire danger amid drought. Details emerge in Beavers motorcycle crash death

Beavers, 48, Bridgeport resident, died Christmas Eve in a westbound crash on FM 1810 near Chico. Trooper Christopher Petty said he was trying to catch his son Johnny, who led on a separate bike, when Beavers failed to negotiate a left curve near FM 2127 and ran off the north shoulder.

Postal Rates Rise for 39 Cent Stamps and More

Audrie Palmer notes effective Monday new USPS rates take effect after Sunday January 8 with stamps rising from 37 to 39 cents a 5.4 percent increase justified by a 3.1 billion budget. Postcard rates jump from 23 to 24 cents and priority mail up to one pound climbs 20 cents as Congress may decide fund use.

Mona Returns Home After Seizure-Free Months

Bridgeport girl Mona Castillo, 9, made it home last Thursday after a second corpus callosotomy. Her mother Rachel reports no major seizures since December 9 while Mona enjoys activities at home, smiling and tossing a ball. Doctors raised her medicine levels without zombification as a side effect.

Runaway Bay chili cook-off sponsored by community church

Runaway Bay Community Church hosts its third annual chili cook-off in the fellowship hall on Saturday January 14. Public invited to taste, judge, and enter. Contestants supply their own utensils and imaginative names while prizes go to best chili and best decorated serving areas. No canned chilis. Tickets five dollars at church office or from members. available at the door. Chili will be served.

New Chico Code Enforcement Officer Coit Harris

Coit Harris began his new role as Chico's Code Enforcement Officer on January 3, leaving a long career in surveying dating back to 1978. A Chico High School salutatorian, Harris earned his surveying license in 1987 and started Harris Surveying in 1989. He will keep his license for City use while transitioning from running his own firm and reflecting on thirteen years with the Decatur Fire Department.
